12 Monkeys Recap: The Night Room

12 Monkeys” Season 1 Episode 5 “The Night Room” aired on Friday, Feb. 13, 2015 at 9:00 p.m. Syfy. Railly is finally able to locate the Night Room and with Cole’s help, they seek to contain the virus. However, the Pallid Man and his Army of the 12 Monkeys get there ahead of them. Find out what happened in the recap below.

It’s 2043 and the scientists and engineers are busy repairing the time machine after that unfortunate attempt to infiltrate the compound by the West Seven (in the last episode “Atari” air date: Feb. 7, 2015). The reactor is apparently still going to function. It means that Cole (Aaron Stanford) can return to Railly (Amanda Schull) in 2015 to locate the Night Room.

Cole, Jones (Barbara Sukowa), Ramse (Kirk Acevedo) and Max (Romina D’Ugo) celebrate with a night cap before the big day. They believe that this will be the last they’ll see each other. Locating the Night Room with the deadly virus means that they will finally be able to change the course of history. While drinking and celebrating, the three learn some bits of Jones’ past in that she’s actually a married German doctor who took the name of her husband.

It’s 2015 and Cole is with Railly, ready to get into the Night Room. They are inches closer to it, but they are unaware that the 12 Monkeys army is already in the location ahead of them. Apparently, Jennifer Goines (Emily Hampshire), which the army has held captive, reveals its location to the Pallid Man (Tom Noonan). Only, Jennifer withholds vital information. That is, there’s a failsafe to the vault in the Night Room. She’s the only one who can deactivate this. Every code is in her head.

During this time, with the army holding them hostage as they work through the vault, Jennifer becomes attached to Cole for some reason. It’s as if something is prompting her to make Cole the ally. When she learns that it was Cole who killed her father (in the episode “Splinter” air date: Jan. 16, 2015), Jennifer actually expressed her gratitude to him.

But when the Pallid Man reveals that it was Cole who killed Railly’s friend Henry (in the episode “Cassandra Complex” air date: Jan. 30, 2015), the doctor gets angry and starts freaking out. Cole did admit to killing Henry but reasons that had he not done this. The army will capture him and learn about the Night Room, which they still did anyway through Jennifer.

Railly starts blaming Cole for ruining her life. She claims everything was normal before he came. She draws back from this task of preventing the apocalypse. Cole can find someone else; she wants nothing more but to heal people. In appeasing Railly, Cole finally tells her bits about himself, which she has been wanting to know before. He reveals that this mission of finding the virus is a way of redeeming himself for the crazy things he has done while being with West Seven.

As this is happening, commandos from the Markridge, the group that owns the Night Room, have started to occupy the place, leading Pallid Man and the Army of the 12 Monkeys to retreat. Cole takes this chance to ask Jennifer to help them out. She quickly disables the failsafe to reveal the main source of the virus. It turns out to be part of a rotting carcass.

But upon seeing this, the Pallid Man and his army try to snatch the virus sample. But with Railly and Cole’s quick thinking, they were able to activate a mechanism that burned the virus source and the lab to the ground. Some of the army also gets burned in the process. Is it over? Apparently not, because Cole is still alive in this timeline. Destroying the virus source did not change the course of the world. What will they have to do then?

Meanwhile, the Pallid Man is able to grab Cassie and take her hostage. Cole and Jennifer run after them. Unfortunately, Cole suddenly transports in time and disappears, leaving Jennifer shocked and all by herself.

Back in 2043, Ramse is snooping around Jones’ room. He’s heard stories about a German doctor who has done some experiments on people and he does find a file of the Splinter project. Jones catches Ramse and defends that she’s doing this for the mission. She has to sacrifice a few human beings for the rest of mankind.

In another timeline, Cole reappears after transporting from 2015. He’s in the reactor but there’s definitely something wrong around him as the machine looks old and dingy. The compound has weeds everywhere, too. He steps out of the room and calls Ramse, but instead finds a group of people. And on the wall, there’s a symbol for the West Seven. What is going on?
