Amanda Bynes’ Involuntary Hold Extended

Amanda Bynes will remain in Las Encinas Hospital for another two weeks. The hospital conducted an administrative hearing when the actress’ initial involuntary hold expired after 72 hours. Under California’s 5150 law, an individual can be detained in such circumstances if a mental referee decides that she is “a danger to self, to others or is gravely disabled.” Read on for further details.

Bynes, 28, was forcibly taken to the treatment center by a chauffeur after her parents Lynn and Rick, their lawyer Tamak Arminak and Sam Lutfi lured the actress to Los Angeles. Lutfi, who played a central role in the ruse, befriended the actress a month prior and convinced her to sue her parents. She took a liking to Lutfi, and tweeted “You feel like a brother to me @SamLutfi I mean it. Thank you Luvv.”

Paparazzi swarmed over the former Nickelodeon star at LAX. She claimed that her parents deserted her. “I’m going to sue my father and my mother for deserted me, I’m one of the smartest girls on the face of the earth, I’m also a multi-millionaire, and I’m awesome,” said Bynes as published on the Daily Mail.

Bynes believed that a driver would pick her up from the airport and take her to a lawyer’s office and then to a hotel where she would inform her parents of the lawsuit, but she was taken to Las Encinas Hospital instead.

Lutfi was notably involved in Britney Spears’ widely publicized meltdown in 2008. He was accused of recklessly medicating the pop star at the time. CBS News described him as “a shady hanger-on who controlled everything – from doling out [Britney’s] pills to holding the paparazzi’s leash.”

Bynes’ involuntary psychiatric hold comes after the actress began to display erratic behavior since leaving her parents’ home. She was arrested for a DUI in September and was accused of shoplifting at a department store. Things came to a head after Bynes released a series of graphic tweets accusing her father of sexual abuse, then recanted, saying that “a microchip” made her say such things.

Meanwhile, Lynn defended her husband.

“These allegations stem from Amanda’s mental state at the moment. They have no basis in reality. It saddens me beyond belief that my husband’s character could be slandered in such a way,” stated Lynn on E! News.

Rick and Lynn Bynes visited their daughter at the center shortly after her arrival. They have yet to publicly comment on another conservatorship.
