Anna Wintour Explains Why Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Graces Vogue Cover for April 2014

Anna Wintour finally explained why Kim Kardashian and Kanye West graces the Vogue cover for April 2014.

On March 21, 2014, Kim Kardashian tweeted about her first ever Vogue cover:

If this was just an ordinary glossy magazine, it would not have been a big deal. However, it’s Vogue!

It can be recalled how Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue, stated with fervor that never will Kim Kardashian appear on Vogue, “over her dead body.”

According to International Business Times UK, Wintour banned Kardashian from the biggest event in the fashion world, the Metropolitan Costume Institute Gala 2012. In 2013, Kardashian’s photo was cropped out of its Web site coverage. So what happened?

Wintour denied that Kanye West begged her to put his fiancée on the cover. It was in fact the publication’s will to do so.

In a report from Daily Mail, the editor-in-chief clarified the rumors through the Vogue April 2014 issue’s editor’s letter.

“You may have read that Kanye begged me to put his fiancée on Vogue’s cover. He did nothing of the sort. The gossip might make better reading, but the simple fact of the matter is that it isn’t true,” wrote Wintour as published in the Daily Mail report.

Wintour further explained why they chose the controversial couple to grace the cover of the magazine’s April 2014 issue. She wrote in the editor’s letter that aside from the pleasure of editing Vogue, another important tradition of the magazine lies in being able to define culture at any given time and whose presence shapes how the world looks.

“Kanye is an amazing performer and cultural provocateur, while Kim, through her strength of character, has created a place for herself in the glare of the world’s spotlight, and it takes real guts to do that,” added Wintour as published in Toronto Sun.

In the Vogue April 2014 issue cover, Kardashian is wearing a strapless Lanvin wedding gown, with West embracing her from behind. However, not everyone was happy about a Kardashian landing a Vogue cover.

The former “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” actress, Sarah Michelle Gellar, aired her thoughts about the cover on Twitter:

Seth Rogen and James Franco, who have spoofed Kanye West and Kim Kardashian’s “Bound 2” music video, also spoofed the couple’s Vogue cover for April 2014. Check out Rogen’s tweet about it below:
