Archie Panjabi Leaves ‘The Good Wife’
Archie Panjabi will exit “The Good Wife” after Season 6. The actress, 42, has signed with 20th Century TV for a pilot drama in the fall of 2015 and will, therefore, not be renewing her contract with the show once the season is over. Read on to learn more about this scoop.
Panjabi, who plays Kalinda Sharma on “The Good Wife,” is one of two original characters to leave the show. Former co-star Josh Charles, who played Will Gardner, made an abrupt exit last season after his character was killed off. Producers revealed that Charles had asked to be let go from the show once Season 4 ended.
Panjabi won an Emmy Award in 2010 for her role on “The Good Wife,” as well as a handful of nominations. The creators of the show, Robert and Michelle King, expressed their take on Kalinda’s departure.
“Archie is an amazing actress who helped build Kalinda from the ground up as an enigmatic, powerful, and sexy character. It’s been a pleasure to write for her, and we’ll be sad to see her go; but we still have her for the rest of Season 6, so let’s not exhaust our good-byes yet,” said the Kings in a statement, as published on TV Line.
Rumors of a feud between Panjabi and co-star Julianna Marguiles emerged earlier this year. Buzzfeed noted that the two actresses have not appeared in the same scene for over thirty episodes despite the close relationship between their characters. However, the show's producers have denied any connection between the alleged feud and Panjabi's decision to leave the show.
Entertainment Weekly's Samantha Highfill argued that the Panjabi's exit was inevitable, considering the turn of events from last season.
“By killing Will, the show cut a very important tie to Kalinda, and by keeping her removed from Alicia—literally, the two of them haven’t shared a scene in more than 30 episodes— it set up walls around her character, isolating her,” said Highfill on Entertainment Weekly.
“The Good Wife” began airing in 2009, and the main plot revolves around Alicia Florrick, who
goes back to work as a litigator after her attorney husband gets imprisoned.
