The ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ M. Night Shyamalan’s re-‘Visit’ to the Horror World

Night Shyamalan of “The Sixth Sense” fame has had a rough time in the past couple of years since the aftermath of his disastrous sci-fi adaption, “After Earth”. He is back, however, in the supernatural scenario with “The Visit” and boy-oh-boy, does it look promising!

In direct contrast to all his previous films, Shyamalan’s “The Visit” is a found footage movie, which lends a chaotic visual energy to all the frames, showcasing a side of the director-filmmaker that we have never seen before. It follows the story of 15-year-old Becca (Olivia DeJonge), and her younger brother Tyler (Ed Oxenbould) as they go off to visit their grandparents, Nana (Deanna Dunagan) and Pop Pop (Peter McRobbie) for a weeklong trip, in the wake of their mother’s (Kathyrn Hahn) messy divorce. What starts out as a fun vacation, however, quickly turns into a rollercoaster of sinister and terrifying events! The film is scary, quirky and funny in equal parts, with a refreshingly fresh outlook towards a genre that has otherwise been worn down to death.

On the money-making front, the film is looking at an opening of $15 million to $17 million, based on tracking by the trade pundits, says Variety. Although, both ‘The Visit’ and the Sanaa Lathan/Michael Ealy/Morris Chestnut starrer, ‘The Perfect Guy’ are vying for the top spot over the weekend, some analysts expect the former to climb ahead and win out in the end. A PG-13 rating should help bring in the teenage audience too, portending big bucks for Shyamalan’s self-funded, low-budget venture.

Distributed by Universal Studios and Blumhouse, ‘The Visit’ opens to over 3000 theatres in America, signalling an end to M. Night Shyamalan’s cold streak. After ‘The Sixth Sense’, ‘Signs’, ‘Unbreakable’ and ‘The Last Airbender’, comes another movie that is at odds with all of Shyamalan’s typical recipes and yet manages to combine horror, comedy and weirdness in a beautiful way.
