The Australian horror film “Babadook” spooks would-be movie goers at it releases its latest trailer Wednesday last week.
Six years after the violent death of her husband, Amelia (Essie Davis) struggles to discipline her “out-of-control” six-year-old son named Samuel (Noah Wieseman). Amelia finds difficult to love her son especially when Samuel’s obsession stems from the monster from his dreams. Samuel believes is coming to kill them both.
A disturbing storybook called “Mister Babadook” turns up at their house. Samuel is now convinced that the Babadook is the creature he has been dreaming about. As Amelia begins to see glimpses of the creature herself, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about the monster is true.
The film screened in April 2014 at the Stanley Film Festival. The movie also premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival where it received critical acclaim.
“[It] manages to deliver real, seat-grabbing jolts while also touching on more serious themes of loss, grief and other demons that cannot be so easily vanquished.” said Variety’s Scott Foundas in the article.
The film received general positive reviews. Based on 21 reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes, the film has received an overall approval rating from critics of 100 percent.
“The Babadook is the best genre creature creation since the big black wolf-dog aliens from Attack the Block.” said Dan Schindel from Movie Mezzanine.
“Babadook” was directed and written by first-time director, Jennifer Kent. It was also produced by Causeway Films. It stars Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman, Daniel Henshall, Hayley McElhinney, Barbara West and Ben Winspear.
It will be distributed domestically by IFC Midnight and will receive a limited released in the states by Nov. 28, 2014.
IFC Films is an American film distribution company based in New York, an offshoot of IFC owned by AMC Networks. It distributes independent films and documentaries under the IFC Films, Sundance Selects and IFC Midnight brands.
