Read on to learn more about this episode.
Detective Lieutenant Everett Backstrom’s (Rainn Wilson) was surprised after Gregory Valentine’s (Thomas Dekker) tormentor, Dante Trippi (Jim Dreichel), died in front of him while he was smoking near his house. Afterwards, the team decided to do everything that they could to find Trippi’s murderer as Backstrom’s ex-fiance, Amy Gazanian (Sarah Chalke), had informed him that the Civilian Oversight Committee might investigate into him again as they had heard that he had threatened Trippi to never go near Valentine again by breaking his jaw. However, as his team only found suspects who had a weaker case of being a suspect compared to Backstrom, Backstrom instructed Sergeant Peter Niedermayer (Kristoffer Polaha) to look over the forensic evidence near the river again.
Later that night, Valentine called up Backstrom after someone tried to shoot him as he walked home to the barge.
At the station, he informed his half-brother that he had been in business with Trippi as he had taken over his wine distribution business in which he picked up the wine crates when it came in via a river tugboat, and dropped it off at a particular drop off point so that Trippi and his men could distribute to their buyers.
As one of the river cops, Hank Altano (Colby French), was being investigated by the Oversight Committee, Backstrom took the opportunity to ask Amy for any information she had on him, and tried to figure out who she was now dating. Afterwards, Backstrom and Detective John Almond (Dennis Haysbert) paid a visit to Altano, who only taunted Backstrom, which caused Almond to tell Backstrom that his brother should start owning up to his actions as he was going to some day jeopardize all of their careers.
Meanwhile, Niedermayer and Officer Frank Moto (Page Kennedy) met Valentine’s suppliers, twin brothers Zane Backman (Yan Feldman) and Ali Backman (Rafael Feldman), who had been distributing counterfeit wine as they had been refilling, recorking and relabeling bottles, which meant that the motive was revenge, as the bottles were being sold at exorbitant prices.
They then tried to use Valentine as bait to lure out the buyer who was most probably the killer, by continuing with the pick up as usual. However, the tugboat captain, Analeigh Kee (Rusty Schwimmer) had to be stopped my Moto and Almond, and was brought in. After realizing, thanks to Nadia Paquet (Beatrice Rosen), that the buyer was someone from the Portland Governor’s Club, they instructed Valentine to deliver the wine in Trippi’s place. As he did so, the club’s sommelier, Arthur Towne (David Alapy), put a gun to his head as he had been paranoid since Trippi’s murder, and told Valentine that he had only ordered one crate, which made them wonder who stood to gain by getting the other crate.
After questioning Analeigh, Backstrom managed to get evidence that Altano was trying to profit from it as well, which allowed Amy to put him away for good. However, Backstrom became annoyed after discovering that Amy was dating Captain Jessie Rocha (Adam Beach), whom he disliked.
Back at the barge, Backstrom confronted Valentine after discovering that the contents of Trippi’s stomach- wafers, expensive cheese, meat and wine, were in his garbage bin, and after Backstrom found Trippi’s wallet inside Valentine’s room. Valentine then told him that Trippi had wanted to take over Valentine’s in-vitro grown meat business as he was protecting Backstrom, who didn’t believe him, until he told him that Trippi had been blackmailing him as he had threatened to ruin Backstrom’s career as there was an EMT willing to testify that Backstrom had broken his jaw and had threatened him.
Back at the precinct, the entire team tasted the counterfeit wine, which they all liked, except for Paquet, who really knew how good wine tasted like. Because of this, Backstrom realized that everything was about blackmail and wine, as Trippi had been blackmailing Towne who had wanted out.
At the club, after Backstrom ordered some bottles of fake wine, one club member realized that it was counterfeit.
Back at the barge, the Backstrom agreed to never meddle in Valentine’s affairs again if he promised that there was nothing on the barge that would put his career in jeopardy.
Afterwards, Amy swung by, and asked him in person to release her from him. After she left, Backstrom tried to make a new kite, but as he was upset, he tore it apart instead.
