Backstrom Recap: Give ‘Til It Hurts
“Backstrom” Season 1 Episode 8 “Give ‘Til It Hurts” aired last Thursday, March 26, 2015. In this episode, the Special Crimes Unit investigated the death of the wealthy woman who had been run over. It led the entire team to go undercover at a charity benefit. Meanwhile, Detective Lieutenant Everett Backstrom’s (Rainn Wilson) with his ex-fiancee, Amy Gazanian (Sarah Chalke) took a turn for the worse. Read on to learn more about this episode.
The episode began with Gregory Valentine (Thomas Dekker) going to Detective Lieutenant Everett Backstrom’s (Rainn Wilson) appointment with Doctor Deb (Rizwan Manji) instead of him. He had gone to his ex-fiancee’s apartment, Amy Gazanian (Sarah Chalke), as she needed help getting rid of an opossum that was in her bedroom. However, before he could do anything, he got called to a murder scene at a parking garage. Their victim, Vanessa Taymor, wife of the wealthy tennis player Tad Taymore (Chris Payne Gilbert), had been run over several times. Backstrom immediately suspected the husband of being the murderer, but he later found out that Tad had been in the hospital for six weeks. He was participating in a clinical trial for an experimental drug, as he had stage four lung cancer.
Thanks to Nadia Paquet (Beatrice Rosen) and Officer Frank Moto (Page Kennedy), Backstrom and Detective John Almond (Dennis Haysbert) paid a visit to Vanessa’s usual Mah Jong meeting with several wealthy ladies who were all heads of various charitable organizations.
Thanks to Sergeant Peter Niedermayer’s (Kristoffer Polaha) politeness and tea, they discovered that Vanessa had advocated that none of their charitable organizations should accept donations from Donald Sampson. It was due to a video that had been leaked in which he gave very racist comments.
After paying a visit to Tad, who had a dream board in his hospital room, Paquet realized that the yellow purse that Tad had given to Vanessa, who always brought it with her no matter where she went was missing. After searching high and low in all of the mansions, they found it in Kristin Kelly’s house. However, she was a certified kleptomaniac. She had stolen the purse after discovering that Vanessa had been killed. She also told them that she had seen a White coop go out.
At the fire escape, Dr. Deb instructed him to wear a pedometer and to take 10,000 steps before his next appointment with him or else he would tell the department that he wasn’t fit enough to work.
Afterwards, Almond and Backstrom went over to the downtown mission. It was run by a former convict as he had argued with Vanessa over accepting a donation from Sampson. However, Almond wasn’t able to ask any more questions, as Backstrom had gotten into a fight with a homeless man over some sloppy joes. However, it turned out that that homeless man fed coins into a parking lot at a hotel. After learning that he checked in twice a week, they deduced that Sampson was having an affair. It could have been with Vanessa in order to get revenge on Tad for beating him at an important tournament.
Because of this, the entire unit dressed to the nines and went undercover at the Charity Event at Sampson’s house that night so that they could also search his garage for a white Coop.
There, Niedermayer and Moto tried to look for a way to the garage, with no luck. Backstrom then danced with Amy and tried to kiss her. He then followed her outside where she told him that she didn’t want to get back together him, as her own father had been an alcoholic. She then gave him her father’s old Alcoholics Anonymous chip and left. This led Backstrom to drink a lot. He even talked a little bit to Sampson himself. However, Backstrom and Valentine later discovered that his mistress, who was not Vanessa, had leaked that video. Afterwards, Backstrom told them to look for a “poor person’s car” instead of a Coop.
This, however, paid off as they discovered that a rental car under Vanessa’s name had run her over. Because of this, they checked her credit card history, where they discovered that she had been paying Dr. Daniel Bai (Assaf Cohen) to give her husband the real drugs. However, he had been given the placebo, as he was in the control group. Backstrom then noticed that Tad’s dream board didn’t reflect a rich person’s board, which made him think that it was the nurse’s dream board, as she had helped in making it. Afterwards, Backstrom reasoned that she had seen Tad as an opportunity to get rich, and Detective Nicole Gravely (Genevieve Angelson) discovered that as the nurse had access to Vanessa’s credit card, she had done it, and had rented the car that had killed her.
Back at the precinct, Backstrom tried to con his way out of walking 10,000 steps by giving Dr. Deb the Alcoholics Anonymous chip, but he still insisted that he walk 10,000 steps every day.
