Backstrom Recap: Love Is A Rose and You Better Not Pick It
“Backstrom” Season 1 Episode 10 “Love Is A Rose and You Better Not Pick It” aired last Thursday, Apr. 9, 2015 on FOX. In this episode, the Special Crimes Unit and Assistant District Attorney Steven Kines (Ben Hollingsworth) teamed up in order to solve the murder of a sex surrogate. Along the way, Detective Lieutenant Everett Backstrom (Rainn Wilson) discovered some things about himself and the truth behind his mother’s death. Read on to learn more about this episode.
The episode opened in Rose Garden. Assistant District Attorney Steven Kines (Ben Hollingsworth) informed Detective Lieutenant Everett Backstrom (Rainn Wilson) that he was going to be with them in every step of this particular case. The mayor wanted the murder to be solved as soon as possible as Miss America and her mother were going to have a tour and a pictorial in the Rose Garden soon.
Backstrom was then informed by Sergeant Peter Niedermayer (Kristoffer Polaha), that their victim, twenty-eight-year-old Larissa Moscovitz (Tatyana Forrest) had been killed due to blunt force trauma to the head between six in the evening to midnight. They then brought in Norman Gilman (Frank Collison), the man who had called the police, after they discovered that one of his shovels was the murder weapon.
At the precinct, they discovered that Larissa had been arrested for solicitation eight years ago. She had had intercourse before she had died and that she was a type of life coach as she was a licensed sex surrogate.
After interrogating Norman, they discovered that he was just a peeping tom who took pictures of women using his cell phone camera through a hole in his pocket.
At Larissa’s apartment, Officer Frank Moto (Page Kennedy) discovered a vase of purple roses. Detective Sergeant John Almond (Dennis Haysbert) discovered that Larissa was supposed to have an appointment with one Dimitri Green (Theo Borders), whose girlfriend, Claire McGrail (Lindsey Kraft), was surprised that Dimitri was having sessions with Larissa.
While Moto followed up on the purple roses, as he believed that they were connected to the case, Detective Nicole Gravely (Genevieve Angelson) and Backstrom interviewed the couple separately, and discovered that their alibis checked out.
As every licensed sex surrogate was referred to by a psychotherapist, Backstrom went undercover and had a session with Dr. Fleck (John Fleck). He usually referred patients to Larissa, but instead, referred Backstrom to another one, a woman named Sandy Hale-Cooper (Ann Cusack). After Backstrom revealed that he was a detective, he told him that his analysis didn’t hold. Fleck told him that he knew that he had been rejected and abandoned as a child.
Backstrom then was given a session by Sandy, who talked a lot, and engaged him in role playing situations. However, she had no idea who had killed Larissa. She told Backstrom that she knew that he had been abandoned as a child and that he should create a shrine of sorts for her. However, Gregory Valentine (Thomas Dekker) told him that it didn’t apply to him as Backstrom’s mother had died giving birth to him. Backstrom showed Valentine the baby bowl that she had made for him, but didn’t make a shrine.
The next day, they brought Claire in after Moto discovered that she had sent the flowers. However, she revealed that she had known that Dimitri had been seeing Larissa and that she had seen a red-haired woman who had called her a fake.
They then interviewed Joshua Larimer (Calum Worthy), a twenty-year-old paralytic, who told Moto that he had been a client, but that he now had a girlfriend. They also discovered that his mother, Janet Larimer (Kerry O’Malley) had been happy with Larissa.
They then brought in Sandy, whom Backstrom believed had been jealous of Larissa. It turned out that neither she nor Fleck killed Larissa.
While the team looked through Fleck’s and Larissa’s client files, Valentine came and told Backstrom that his surrogate had been right about his mother. He had learned from his grandmother who had been a nurse at the hospital where Backstrom had been born, that a few months after he was born, Backstrom’s mother shot herself with his father’s gun.
Moto then discovered that Larissa had been in love with Joshua. She was seeing him beyond the required amount of sessions. They then realized that Joshua’s mother had killed Larissa so that Joshua would be able to be happy. Thanks to Norman’s pictures, was able to place Janet in the Rose Garden, close to the time that Larissa had died.
Back at the boat, Backstrom decided to throw his mother’s bowl into the furnace and greeted a “therapist”, whom he was spending the night with. Valentine, however, managed to rescue the bowl and kept it without his half brother knowing.
