In this episode Detective Russ Agnew (Dean Winters) and the team helped Detective Fontanelle “Font” White (Kal Penn) investigate whether a fugitive on the FBI’s most wanted list was in town after spotting him running a red light. Read on to learn more about this episode.
While helped Detective Fontanelle “Font” White (Kal Penn) was driving himself and Detective Russ Agnew (Dean Winters) to work in his new car, he suddenly stopped and began following a brown Buick after it ran a red light as he had recognized the driver as Barclay Spades (Dan Bakkedahl), a fugitive on the FBI’s most wanted list, as he was wanted for insider trading and murder. However, they weren’t able to catch up to him on time, as Spades had managed to get across the train tracks before an incoming train came.
Font then informed FBI Special Agent Milton “Milt” Chamberlain (Josh Duhamel), who then told him that Spades had committed suicide six months ago. However, as Commander Kim Guziewicz (Janet McTeer) and Russ knew that Font never forgot a face, and could spot someone from a distance, Russ and Font went over to Detroit, to the bridge where Spades had supposedly committed suicide and talked to the police officer who had tried to talk him down. Russ then discovered that Spades hadn’t died as there was a small area where he could land on after he had jumped.
Back at the morgue, Medical Examiner Meredith Oberling (Meredith Eaton) told them that the FBI had misidentified the body as the blood type of the DNA found on the body didn’t match Spades’ real blood type, as she was able to get a blood sample from his clothes, which she obtained with Milt’s help.
Thanks to a suggestion made by Holly Dale (Aubrey Dollar), they checked out all the German restaurants in town, as Spades’ parents were half German. They then staked out the place the next morning, as the shop’s owner was making a special sausage that he only made once a month. While they waited, Milt, who knew that Holly was going to go on her five day cruise trip with her new boyfriend that coming weekend, told Russ to admit his feelings for her. However, Russ got distracted after seeing Spades talk to a pregnant woman before going inside the shop.
They then decided to enter after realizing that Detective Aaron “Funk” Funkhauser (Edward “Grapevine” Fordham Jr.) wasn’t replying to them on the radio, only to discover that everyone had been herded into the store’s walk in freezer. Spades then appeared with the pregnant woman whom he had held hostage, and forced everyone inside. He then told them that he only stole from the rich, donated everything that he had gotten, and had bought his body double to fake his own death. He also told them that he had known who Funk was as he had memorized the faces of all the cops in Battle Creek.
Afterwards, Milt called in the Fugitive Task Force to help them out. Russ then told Milt to tell them to check any farms that had been bought or sold in the past couple of days as his tire tracks were muddy. He then told Milt that he wasn’t going to stalk Holly on the cruise, and became upset after discovering that Milt knew that Holly came from a wealthy family, as he didn’t know that.
Meanwhile, Font found the brown Buick he saw earlier that morning and he, Funk and Detective Erin Jacocks (Liza Lapira) entered without waiting for backup. They then rushed out after realizing that it was a trap and got outside just as a pipe bomb blew. However, they had to rush Font to the hospital, where he underwent surgery and was placed in the ICU as a piece of shrapnel had gotten embedded in his skull.
While Font recovered, Katrina White (Tehmina Sunny), his wife, told Holly that Font believed that Russ liked Holly. However, Holly told her that she had never rejected Russ and was just waiting for him to make a move.
Afterwards, an emotional Russ realized that this case had everything Spades had done was for show. He and Milt then questioned the police officer who had tried to talk Spades out of committing suicide after realizing that the officer had been on it the whole time.
Thanks to that, they were able to arrest Spades before he left on his getaway boat which was docked in the town’s harbor.
However, since Spades was a Federal Fugitive and because the Fugitive Task Force had been involved, the credit had to go to the FBI. They then learned that Font was going to make a full recovery.
Afterwards, as they were about to go down to another floor, Milt pushed Russ out so that he could talk to Holly who was coming their way. However, Russ didn’t do anything to stop Holly, and Russ and Milt left the hospital, satisfied that they had caught their guy.
