Benedict Cumberbatch Jokes About Doctor Strange [WATCH VIDEO]

Rumored "Doctor Strange" actor, Benedict Cumberbatch teases fans about the Marvel role. Read on for more details about this story.

Benedict Cumberbatch was reported last week to be in final negotiations for the lead role of Marvel’s upcoming feature “Doctor Strange.” It has been a week, and still, there is no official confirmation from Marvel regarding the news. However, according, Cumberbatch may be Marvel’s “Doctor Strange.”

In an interview with IGN, the actor was asked about the role, to which he jokingly responds by asking for the hosts to explain who Doctor Strange was, nodding and looking at the camera and taking a long drink, admitting that this Doctor Strange, “maybe” is a character he’d like to play.

Marvel has coveted actor Joaquin Phoenix for the role for some time, but since negotiations failed in early October, many A-list celebs were rumored to take the part such as Jared Leto, Ryan Gosling, Tom Hardy, Ethan Hawke, Justin Theroux, Keanu Reeves and of course, Cumberbatch. The 38-year-old actor comes from a strong background in science-fiction and fantasy acting, which includes a starring role as Kahn in "Star Trek: Into Darkness," the voice of Smaug in "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" and Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series "Sherlock." Scott Derickson is tied to direct Marvel’s feature pic from a script by Jon Spaihts, which is scheduled for a theatrical release on July 8, 2016.

“Doctor Strange” was created by Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko and made his first ever appearance in Strange Tales #110 in 1963. Originally a gifted surgeon, the egotistical Dr. Stephen Strange’s life changed when he got into a car accident that badly damaged the nerves of his hands. Seeking the help of the Ancient One to heal his hands, the surgeon turned sorcerer was then trained instead to be proficient in the verse of Mystic Arts, becoming Earth’s greatest and most powerful mystic and master of the arcane arts — the Sorcerer Supreme — tasked to defend the realm against demons and mystical forces, such as Baron Mordo, Dormammu, Shuma-Gorath, the Undying Ones and Nightmare.

“Doctor Strange” is scheduled to begin shooting in May 2015 at Pinewood-Shepperton studios in UK for a scheduled release on July 8, 2016.
