Read on to learn more about this episode.
The episode began with a man murdering a homeless man by setting him on fire in Brownsville.
Before leaving the apartment, Assistant District Attorney Erin Reagan (Bridget Moynahan) asked a question for Nikki Reagan’s (Sami Gayle) school video presentation. She informed her daughter that she hates it whenever she’s not able to bring a criminal to justice. Because of this, she decided to reopen an investigation into the unsolved murder of Detective Alex McBride’s (James Lesure) mother.
Meanwhile, at the 54th Precinct, Lieutenant DeeAnn Carver (LaTanya Richardson Jackson) informed Detective Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) and Detective Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) that as part of the “Rescue Ride” program, a sixteen year old teenage delinquent named Charelle Tyler (Dominique Fishback) would be riding with them. It was instead of serving time in prison so that they could show her that police officers were good people.
At the Police Commissioner’s Office, Police Commissioner Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) informed his people that he wanted the murder of Benjamin Wilson. He is the homeless man who had been set on fire, solved. Meeting Anne Farrell (Leslie Hope) was going on the record on television saying that the police were inept as no one had helped the poor man or called 911 when the murder happened. He then decided to meet up with her, and there, he confirmed his suspicions that all she wanted to do was to take him down.
Meanwhile, despite the fact that Danny and Maria instructed Charelle to stay near the car while they investigated a homicide in a trashed drug stash house, Charelle decided to take a look and ended up throwing up outside. Danny then told her that it was good that she saw the victim so that she would be scared enough to be more careful in the future. It was especially as she had been found with drugs in her pocket when she had first been arrested.
Later, at the precinct, Carver told Danny that the reason why she had a lot of faith in the Rescue Ride program. It was because of that program that she had gotten saved and the reason why she had become a cop.
Afterward, they interrogated Melvin Williams (Jerell Lee Wesley), the owner of the apartment that had been trashed. They discovered that whoever orchestrated the robbery and the murder of his cousin were all cops. Because of this, Maria decided to talk to a detective she knew at the Narcotics Division to see if they knew anything about this. While Danny looked at surveillance videos, he told Charelle not to assume that everything was the work of dirty cops. Because of this, she told him not to assume that she would grow up to be a drug dealer just because she had been charged with possession of drugs. Later, they discovered that the ones who were responsible were a street gang named Money Street Kings.
Meanwhile, Frank tried to get Anne to give up the name of the murderer of Benjamin Wilson, as she managed to get an interview with him. She refused to tell him as she was protected by the first amendment not to give up any names or sources. According to the video, the murderer had done it as part of an initiation to get into a gang.
While this happened, Erin told Alex that the medical examiner’s office, upon retesting the knife that was used in his mother’s murder, that his father, whom he had suspected the entire time, had murdered his mother.
During Sunday dinner, Nikki asked them all, for her school project, what advice they would give their younger selves. After dinner, Erin told her father that she might know a way to get around the first amendment, and in court, managed to convince the judge that Anne should give up the name of Benjamin Wilson’s murderer. However, as she refused to give it, she was thrown into prison.
After a while, she decided to give up the name by calling in an anonymous tip and later on admitted that she hadn’t been fair to the police.
Danny and Maria and a team managed to arrest the Money Street Kings during a raid. It became complicated as Charelle had shown up, and ended up as a hostage. Because of this, Danny decided to put her in holding so that she would think twice next time about interfering.
Meanwhile, Erin comforted Alex. He told him that his legacy wasn’t that he was a killer’s son, but that he was like his mother, who wanted to help others no matter what.
