However, nothing is what it seemed as they discovered that Sam couldn’t have done it at all. Read on to learn more about this episode.
At the police station, Detective Hieronymous “Harry” Bosch (Titus Welliver) instructed everyone to pay attention to every tip that they get so that they could capture the escaped convict Raynard Waits (Jason Gedrick), especially since he had Detective Moore’s (Gregory Scott Cummins) badge and gun. While this happened, Waits, who had been in an old garage, surprised his elderly foster mother, Irene Saxon (Veronica Cartwright), whom he decided to stay with for a while, and took away her glasses so that she wouldn’t see the news properly on the television. Later on, he told her that he would have to go out for a while for work, while fixing her lupus medication, but instead, he went back to the garage to paint his face again. His mother, however, called him by a different name – David.
The next day, Deputy Chief Irvin Irving (Lance Reddick) informed Bosch that he was assembling a Fugitive Task Force to capture Waits, which would include Moore’s partner, and would be headed by Captain Pounds (Mark Derwin). He then warned Bosch to concentrate on catching Arthur Delacroix’s killer.
Back at the station, before Edgar and Bosch left to visit Samuel “Sam” Delacroix (Pat Skipper), she asked Bosch if he thought that Waits did it. However, he told her that he believed that Sam had done it as he had beaten her up, and probably beat Arthur as well.
At Sam’s house, they found that Sam was drunk, and after questioning him for a while, he broke down and confessed to murdering his son. At the station, he told them that he had been drunk when he had picked up Arthur from school, as he had gone to an audition and failed earlier that day. He yelled at Arthur as he was still wearing the black t-shirt that he had asked him to change out of, earlier that morning, and because of this, Arthur tried to get out of the car while it was still moving.
He then had hit him, and then he must have hit his head on the car door, as he couldn’t wake Arthur up. After panicking a little bit, he buried him in Laurel Canyon. However Bosch didn’t believe that he could have carried Arthur up the hill as he had a hard time going up himself, and because Arthur had been killed by a blunt object hitting his skull, like a bat, so it couldn’t have been a car door that killed him. Edgar then decided to take a dummy that was the same size and weight as Arthur, and would climb up the hill with it the next day to see if it could be done.
Later that night, Bosch informed Arthur’s sister, Sheila Delacroix (Jenica Bergere) about the latest development, and told him that their father never hurt them, and that Sam couldn’t have killed Arthur.
At the Irving household, the Deputy Chief scolded his son, Officer George Irving (Robbie Jones), as their case could have been dismissed because he had entered the wrong plate number into the system so that they could book Waits. He then told him not to do it again, as Bosch had convinced his partner not to lodge a complaint against him, and Irving didn’t want to be indebted to him.
Officer Julia Brasher (Annie Wersching) came over that night to Bosch’s apartment, and learned that Bosch’s ex-wife had been an FBI profiler turned professional poker player, who now lives in Las Vegas with their daughter, Maddie.
Meanwhile, at Irene’s house, Waits closed the television as they were broadcasting news about him, and decided to go out for a drive.
Bosch then went to Sam’s house, where he encountered Sheila, who brought home her father’s cat with her. Inside, he discovered a stuck top drawer with a false bottom hiding an envelope with polaroid pictures which showed a man in his underwear, a young woman leaning on his chest, the young woman, and their feet which were intertwined with each other.
Meanwhile, Waits picked up an attractive looking young man, and lured him to a motel room where he proceeded to strangle him to death.
