"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1" proves to be a successful contender at the U.S. box office as it opened to $55 million last Friday and grossed to an estimated $123 million over the weekend. "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1" is the second film in 2014 to open in three-digit millions, beating "Transformers: Age of Extinction," which opened to over $100 million. Meanwhile, at the worldwide box office, "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 opened to $273.8 million becoming the sixteenth largest opening of all time. Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1" reached its $200 million milestone in five days, $300 million in eight days and $400 million in 10 days. As of Nov. 30, 2014, "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1" has grossed $225,693,000 in North America and $254,400,000 in other territories, for a worldwide total of $480,093,000.


First of the two films based on the novel "Mockingjay," the final book in the "Hunger Games" trilogy written by Suzanne Collins, the third installment to the "Hunger Games" film franchise continues to follow the protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, after the events of "Catching Fire." Having twice survived the "Hunger Games," Katniss finds herself in District 13 under the leadership of President Coin.  At the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss reluctantly becomes the symbol of a mass rebellion against the Capitol and fights to save Peeta, her portrayed lover and fellow District 12 tribute, and a nation moved by her courage.

"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1" is directed by Francis Lawrence and produced by Nina Jacobson and Jon Kilik, screenplay by Peter Craig and Danny Strong, and distributed by Lionsgate. It stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jeffrey Wright, Stanley Tucci and Donald Sutherland.
