Broadchurch Finale Recap: Season 2 Episode 8
“Broadchurch” Season 2 Episode 8 aired on Monday, Feb. 23, 2015, at 9:00 p.m. on ITV in UK. In this season finale, the jury delivers a devastating verdict, leading the townsfolk to take matters into their hands. Meanwhile, Hardy and Miller solve the Sandbrook murders. Find out what happened in the episode in the recap below.
After the jury’s cliffhanger last episode (Season 2 Episode 7 air date: Feb. 16, 2015), the finale opens with the actual verdict. They declare that Joe Miller (Matthew Gravelle) is not guilty of the crimes accused of him. A collective gasps is heard throughout the courtroom, and the Latimers exit the area to cry in pain and anger. The Millers, including young Tom, also cry upon hearing the decision.
While Joe is a free man, things doesn’t come easy for him. He realizes his life may be in jeopardy knowing that everyone in town hates him, and so he seeks help from Rev. Paul Coates (Arthur Darvill). But while waiting for the pastor inside the church, Mark (Andrew Buchan) arrives along with Nigel (Joe Sims). They forcibly take Joe to bring him to Beth (Jodie Whittaker) and Ellie (Olivia Colman).
Beth, who wants justice and vengeance for her son’s death, demands that Joe leaves town for good, and Ellie echoes the same sentiment, declaring that Joe is to never see his children ever again. They are dead to him. Ellie also threatens her ex-husband that she will definitely kill him, and unlike Joe, she will own up to the act should he find him checking out her kids in school or at the playground. He is banished from Broadchurch. If he returns, only death will wait for him.
With the end of the trial comes the end of the rivalry between Sharon (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) and Jocelyn (Charlotte Rampling). The latter invites the former to come work with her again. She is, after all, her mentor. But Sharon refuses at first, except that Jocelyn showed her the files of her son’s case in prison. She says she will help for former ward. Will Sharon reconsider?
Meanwhile, still angry from the verdict, Detective Alec Hardy (David Tennant) sets his sight on Lee (James D’ Arby) and demands the truth about the murder of Pippa Gillespie (Holly Burgess) in the Sandbrook case. In the last episode, Claire (Eve Myles) has already surrendered and important piece of evidence, and all that’s left is for someone to talk. Pressed in a corner, Lee reveals what really happened the night Pippa was killed and Lisa (Eliza Bennet) went missing.
And here’s what apparently went down…
Lisa sought protection from Lee against her stalker, and they have grown close as a result. One night, the two ended up having sex with each other. Lisa’s uncle, Ricky (Shaun Dooley) witnessed this and grew jealous and mad because, as Lisa claimed, her uncle actually likes her. In his rage, he accidentally banged Lisa’s head so hard on the floor, and she died instantly.
Lee and Ricky covered this up, but Pippa heard the commotion and cried on the stairs just as Claire arrived and found the young girl. Claire also learned that her husband cheated on her with Lisa, but still, because he’s involved in the cover up with Pippa as the witness, they had agreed to do away with her life too. They held Ricky accountable for everything; it was his rage that was the root cause of it all. Ricky never talked to the police about this incident. Fortunately for them, the police did bungle up the investigation, which is why the case dragged on and caused Hardy serious health problems.
With Lee’s confession, the perpetrators are arrested and the Sandbrook case gets its closure. After everything, Hardy prepares to leave Broadchurch and Ellie shakes his hand as they say their goodbyes.
The season closes with the Latimers and Millers enjoying each other at the beach, on the spot where Danny’s body was found two years ago. It is definitely time for healing.
