In this episode, Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) gets entangled in his own conspiracy after taking up a case involving an old friend, which ended up in him becoming the only witness to a crime. Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic), Detective Kevin Ryan (Seamus Dever) and Detective Javier Esposito (Jon Huertas) teamed up with Private Investigator Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) in order to solve the case. Read on to learn more about this episode.
The episode began with Private Investigator Castle alone in the woods with a flashlight. He looked around and tried to go towards where he heard someone stepping on branches, but was knocked unconscious by a man.
The scene shifted to twelve hours earlier, where Castle wondered why his wife, Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic), wasn’t at the office. She was planning on staying home and catching up on some paperwork at home, but her plans changed right after Castle got a call from a client. Instead, she went to the office as well.
At his office, he was surprised to find that his client was his old schoolmate, Eva Hendricks Whitfield (Brianna Brown). She then asked him if he could follow her husband, Cole Whitfield (Ivan Sergei), as she had a feeling that he was cheating on her. At first, Castle wanted to reject the case, but since she was an old friend, he decided to take the case.
He then followed Cole to a restaurant where he met up with two of his business partners—Robert James and Scott Galloway, and listened in on their conversation. However, after their lunch meeting, instead of going back to the office, Cole called up a woman. Castle then followed him and was able to take some pictures as proof that he was sleeping with another woman, Taylor McKinley (India de Beaufort). He then told Kate that he would be home at around 8:39 p.m. in time for dinner, as she had volunteered to cook for him. However, he first had to head over to Westchester to deliver the pictures to Eva, who was planning on leaving Cole after seeing the proof.
Meanwhile, at the precinct, Detective Kevin Ryan (Seamus Dever) managed to interest Detective Javier Esposito (Jon Huertas) with a girl that he had set him up with, so that he could have a date for the upcoming ski couple’s retreat that they are attending.
At the Whitfield house, Castle heard a woman scream and saw the bloodied body of Eva being dragged across the kitchen floor. Castle then climbed up the gate and chased the car with Eva’s body in it to the woods. He then got down, and the scene in the beginning of the episode plays with Castle knocked unconscious. He realized that his car had been stolen and that he had no cellular signal for his phone. When his phone picked up a signal, he called Kate up. She with a couple of detectives showed up and he gave them his statement. However, they were a little bit skeptical about his version of events as he had only gotten his private investigator license recently.
Cole Whitfield, claiming to have just arrived twenty minutes ago from the office, had them in his house. Cole showed them the note Eva left him, which said that she was going to leave him as she found out about the affair. Castle told them to check for blood residue in the kitchen, but the only blood that they found was from Eva from when she had cut herself with a piece of broken glass recently. This made Cole furious, learning that Castle was accusing him of murder, and kicked them out of the house.
The next morning, Kate discovered that Castle could not sleep that night as it was his case and Eva had been his friend. However, all that Kate could tell him at the moment was that Cole had changed his alibi that he had been with his mistress the night beforehand from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. This prompted Kate to bring in Taylor McKinley, a yoga instructor, who claimed that Cole had been with her until 8 p.m. However, Kate wasn’t too convinced and instructed Ryan and Esposito to find out more about her and Cole.
Meanwhile, Cole discovered that Castle was stalking him at his house, and told the detectives in the area to stop Castle from harassing him. However, before Castle left, Cole told him that Eva had taken several millions of dollars from their joint bank account that morning and she had called him angrily that morning, which proved that she was still alive.
Back at the precinct, no one confirmed seeing Cole at Taylor’s building the other night and they discovered that Cole was previously married to Mallory in Los Angeles, who was quite rich and had died in a freak hiking accident, leaving Cole with millions of dollars which he used to start up his company. Because of this, they began to suspect that he was doing the same thing to Eva. They brought Taylor in again as they discovered that Eva called Cole that morning near Taylor’s apartment. Cole’s company attorney, Aubrey Haskins (Audrey Marie Anderson), came in to help Taylor. The yoga instructor, now a little bit scared, said that she couldn’t the one calling with Eva’s phone as she was at the yoga studio, replacing another instructor at the last minute, during the time that the call happened. After a few calls, they discovered that her alibi for that morning checked out.
Meanwhile, Esposito confronted Ryan upon learning from his blind date that Ryan and Jenny created a Match.com profile for him. He told Ryan that even though he and Medical Examiner Lanie Parish (Tamala Jones) broke up, he could still find a date to bring to the trip.
In the break room, Castle began to assume that someone was setting up the entire thing in true Hitchcock fashion and wanted them to believe that Taylor was the one who called. This led him to thinking that he had been set up to be the witness by Eva herself, which meant that Eva was still alive and that the money she had transferred to herself was for the run. However, Kate put a damper to his theories after learning that Eva’s body had been found in the Hudson River, later confirmed by Lanie that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.
They used these to their advantage by pressuring Taylor into finally telling them the truth. It turned out that Cole had not been with her during the time that they said they had been together, and Lanie had found several of Cole’s hair under Eva’s fingernails. However, when they got to the Whitfield house, they discovered that Cole had hung himself. Castle believed that Cole had been murdered.
The next day, Castle drew up a timeline board and discovered that another possible suspect could be Scott Galloway, Cole’s business partner, who was in massive debt; and Cole’s death would mean that he would be in control of the company, thus paving the way for another company to buy them out, which Cole refused to happen, as this would fix his debts. Castle then told Kate that it was possible that Eva and him teamed up together, and that Scott had double crossed her.
However, Scott’s alibi checked out, which meant that he wasn’t the one. They then discovered that Cole had been having an affair with his other business partner’s wife, Mrs. James, and had been with him during the time that Eva had been murdered. After interrogating the husband, Robert James, they discovered that he and Eva had staged the entire thing, but the morning that she had died, she had gotten cold feet and had told him that the entire thing wasn’t her idea. However, after checking around, they discovered that he wasn’t the murderer and that he had given Eva a key to one of the company-owned apartments so that she could stay there for a while. After entering the apartment, they discovered Eva’s fingerprints and the fingerprints of the company lawyer, Aubrey Haskins.
It turned out that Aubrey had been a close friend of Mallory’s who believed that Cole had murdered Mallory. In order to exact her revenge, she became his company’s lawyer and waited for the right opportunity to arise.
After they arrested her, Esposito informed Ryan that he was going on a date with a spoken-word poet who works as an exotic dancer, and told him that he was bringing her along in their trip.
Later at home, Castle started to have second thoughts about continuing to be a private investigator, but Kate encouraged him not to make any hasty decisions, since he did work hard for it.
