“Castle” Season 8 Episode 5 “The Nose”  aired on Monday, Oct. 19, 2015, at 10:00 p.m. on ABC. In this episode, Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion), Hayley Shipton (Toks Olagundoye), Captain Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) and Detectives Kevin Ryan (Seamus Dever) and Javier “Javi” Esposito (Jon Huertas), joined forces with a woman with a keen sense of smell, who, could identify the killer of their murder victim by smelling him out. Meanwhile, Beckett made a surprising request to Castle and Ryan and Esposito learned which one of them passed the sergeant’s exam.  Read on to learn more about this episode.

The episode began with Mia Laszlo (Stephnie Weir), a woman with a very keen sense of smell, parking in a garage. She became witness to a murder after being trapped in an elevator with the killer, who toted a metal briefcase.

Afterwards, she called 911 and placed an anonymous tip, which reached Captain Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) and Detectives Kevin Ryan (Seamus Dever) and Javier “Javi” Esposito (Jon Huertas). There, Dr. Lanie Parish (Tamala Jones) identified the murder victim as Justin Fletcher, who, according to his younger brother, Graham Fletcher (Kevin Joy) worked as a high-end driver, had a meeting with someone named Falcon.

Later, Ryan and Esposito brought Mia to the precinct. Beckett took her statement before Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) who had brought a celebratory bottle of wine for Esposito, as he had passed the sergeant’s exam.

There, Beckett told Castle that she was going to pass by the house for her things. While waiting for the elevator, Castle bumped into Mia, whose unique gift he recognized after she told him that she could smell Beckett’s pheromones. He then managed to force her to help out in the investigation.

Meanwhile, Hayley Shipton (Toks Olagundoye) joined forces with them. It turned out that Justin had been working as a transporter of high end and illegal goods, for a company called the Falcon Unit, and that the missing item in question was a million dollar lost Van Gogh, which was insured by the company that hired Hayley.

They then discovered that a low level crook named Freddie Stark had been near the area at the time of Justin’s death, but soon discovered that he wasn’t the killer thanks to Mia and thanks to the fact that he had been hired by the Falcon Unit to retrieve the painting. It turned out that transporting the painting had been the job of Liam Hollister (Charles Mesure), who owned a wonderful Rolls Royce, which helped Ryan and Esposito track him down.

There, they gave chase to him after he ran, where Ryan ended up accidentally shooting Esposito in the behind.

While Castle and Mia tracked down a car seller who specialized in buying cars for quick cash. They managed to trap Liam in his own trunk, Beckett and Hayley questioned billionaire and art collector Hawthorne Carter, who came with his assistant, Lorenzo (Aubrey Deeker), who had lost the bid on the painting at the auction, but who had been fine with losing it as he now had a Jackson Pollock in its stead.

They then questioned Liam, who turned out not to be the killer, especially as the painting inside the briefcase was a forgery.

Castle then brought Mia back to his loft so she could enjoy a meal prepared to her specifications by Martha Rodgers (Susan Sullivan), who, she was a great fan of. However, their meal got interrupted as Lorenzo, gun in hand, tried to get Castle to steal the painting from the precinct as the painting originally belonged to his family. It was why he had hired Justin to have the painting forged so that it could be swapped before it permanently disappeared once again. Castle then managed to disarm him but broke Mia’s nose in the process.

After paying another visit to the garage, and using the lead that Mia had given them regarding the killer smelling like acetone, they realized that the killer had been standing beside a leaking air conditioning unit and found a piece of hair there. After running a DNA analysis on it, it revealed that the killer had been Justin’s brother, Graham, who had forged the painting, and had gotten upset that he and Justin wouldn’t get any money out of the entire thing as Graham had a lot of gambling debts to pay.

Afterwards, Mia told Castle that he had been right about the fact that she had been hiding from the overwhelming world all this time, and after Castle gifted her with tickets to Martha’s new play, she told him that Beckett still loved him a lot.

Meanwhile, Beckett went back to the loft to get her things and brought with her a blouse of Castle’s, which she smelled. She then left behind an NYPD sweatshirt, which, Castle discovered and smelled in turn.
