Castle Recap: Resurrection

“Castle” Season 7 Episode 14 “Resurrection” aired last Monday, Feb. 9, 2015, at 10 PM on ABC. In this episode, Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) returned to the precinct to help investigate a case which had direct ties to Dr. Kelly Nieman (Annie Wersching) and the 3XK Killer, Jerry Tyson (Michael Mosley), who seemingly resurrected. Castle and the team raced against time to try to prove that the man that they had was truly Jerry Tyson. Read on to learn more about this episode.

The episode began with a blonde woman in a nightgown running as if she was being chased in an alleyway. However, she stopped after realizing that she was too late as the man in front of her came at her.

The next morning, Marther Rogers (Susan Sullivan) thanked her son, Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion), for suggesting that she audition for a particular role as she was able to get the role. Alexis Castle (Molly C. Quinn) then surprisingly kissed Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) before leaving to go to the library to study. Afterwards, Kate revealed to her husband that she was definitely thinking about having kids with him and was wondering when the right time to have a baby was. However, their conversation was interrupted as she had a crime scene to go to.

There, they discovered the woman who had been running in the very first scene of the episode. She had been strangle to death and had been dumped in the dumpster. They had only found her body in that alleyway as a homeless man named Ed Turner had called it in via 911. However, Medical Examiner Lanie Parrish (Tamala Jones) couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something vaguely familiar about the way that she had died. After running the woman’s prints, they identified her as Susan Watts, a woman who had multiple priors and had gone to jail before but suddenly had a brand new and well-paying job. However, her old roommate told Kate that Susan didn’t say much about her new job.

Detective Kevin Ryan (Seamus Dever) then informed Kate and Detective Javier “Javi” Esposito (Jon Huertas) that Susan had gotten her new job with the aid of the employment agency New Start Horizons and that he could not find any record of her new job. While Kate went over there to check it out, Lanie called Javi to the morgue, where she informed him that Susan’s death had seemed familiar to her because Susan had cosmetic surgery done on her cheek bones and it seemed like the work of Dr. Kelly Nieman, whom they had encountered before. Also, the story of Susan also resembled those of Nieman’s past victims. She also told Javi that she had found a feather in Susan’s hair.

The team had encountered Nieman before as she had been connected to the murders of Daniel Santos and Pam Hodges, both who had cosmetic surgery done by Nieman to look like Javi and Lanie, respectively. However, Nieman was also connected to Jerry Tyson (Michael Mosley), also known as 3XK, a serial killer whom the team had encountered several times before. That was his nickname as he usually killed in groups of three and usually targeted blondes. He had kidnapped both Ryan and Castle before, used Ryan’s gun to commit murder and had framed Castle for murder in their last encounter. However, after that, Castle had shot him which caused him to fall into the river; and since that day, they had no clue as to whether he survived or not. But because of their last Nieman case, they figured that he might still be alive as she had left them a pen with a USB that held a song with the lyrics “We will meet again…”

At New Start Horizons, Lanie informed her of the latest developments, which Kate then confirmed after learning that Nieman was a major donor of the company. However, the director of New Start Horizons claimed that Nieman had never met Susan before.

Back at the precinct, Kate suggested to Captain Victoria Gates (Penny Johnson) that they bring in Castle to help consult on the case since he was an expert on Jerry Tyson. Kate felt that this was necessary so that they could finally prove that Nieman and Tyson were working together. She then told Kate that she would first try to get the District Attorney to agree with her. Afterwards, Ryan directed Kate towards Saint Simon’s Hospital’s cosmetic surgery wing as it seemed like Nieman had clinics there.

Nieman then greeted her and informed her that she did not know who Susan was, and tried to give her a gift bag. Back at the precinct, Castle came as he had been cleared to work with them. Tori then managed to get street camera surveillance footage which showed a woman who looked like Susan exiting the building with a Nieman gift bag the afternoon before. Afterwards, the footage showed that she got into a truck with none other than Jerry Tyson. This proved that he was still alive. While every cop in the precinct combed the city for the girl, Kate and Castle brought in Nieman for questioning.

In the interrogation room, Nieman informed them that the woman in the photo was a woman named Amy Barrett. After digging into her life story, they discovered that she had a similar story to the dead Susan Watts. This made Castle realize that Nieman was creating and grooming victims for Tyson. Meanwhile, they discovered that the truck in the photo belonged to a man named Michael Bourdreau who lived two blocks away from where Susan had died. Kate, Ryan and Javi then went to his apartment and stopped him from trying to escape out the window. As he turned, Kate arrested him as Jerry Tyson.

After searching the apartment, the only thing that they could find that tied him to Amy was Amy’s cellphone in which there was a picture of her.

Back at the precinct, Kate informed Castle that Amy had been treated for substance abuse in a clinic in Ohio where one of their major donors was Nieman.

Inside the interrogation box, the man that they had in custody, Michael, insisted that he didn’t know who Castle and Kate were and told them that he had gotten cosmetic surgery, which made him look like Jerry Tyson. He also informed them that he and Amy were living together and didn’t know where she was at the moment. Afterwards, they were informed by Gates that his prints didn’t match to the only hard copy that they had of Tyson’s prints. They did not have any of his DNA anymore as all of his records and files had been stolen during the first Nieman case. This meant that they had to move him to holding. Castle then volunteered to talk to him at holding because he knew that that man was truly Jerry Tyson. They were then interrupted by Tori who agreed with them and informed them that someone had just used Bourdreau’s credit card to buy lunch at a café. While Kate went to check that lead out, Castle went to holding.

There, he tried to refresh Tyson’s memory and mentioned that night when he had kidnapped him and Ryan. Castle then asked if his theory about him was correct — that the reason why he went after blondes was because he hated his mother, who was a blonde, and he killed them as revenge. At this, Tyson didn’t seem so confident anymore, and Castle saw that he had hit a nerve when he had said that. This meant that everything tied back to his mother.

Meanwhile, Kate discovered that Amy had been using the credit card and gave her her card even though Amy didn’t want to believe her. Afterwards, she and Castle went to White Plains as Gretchen Cutler, Tyson’s mother, was still alive, and they might just be able to get a DNA sample from her to match it to Tyson. However, she told them that Tyson wasn’t her biological child and that Tyson had taken all her keepsakes of him and his biological father who was now dead. She then gave them the few keepsakes that she did have left of them and told them that she hadn’t raised him to be the way he was now. After looking through the things, they discovered a small matchbox in which one of Tyson’s baby teeth was kept, which they ran against some saliva that they had lifted from a beer can found at the apartment. Meanwhile, Gates managed to stall the District Attorney long enough so that they could keep him until the DNA results came in. They were then surprised when they discovered that Nieman had come to the precinct in order to receive Tyson when he was released. Kate then received a phone call from Amy, who told her that she was scared, and told her her location so that Kate could go and bring her into protective custody.

Meanwhile, Castle accompanied Tyson inside the box and told him that he had visited Gretchen and had pulled up her old prison record. What was very interesting was that a young Gretchen looked exactly like Amy and Susan, which meant that Tyson had gone from targeting blondes to actually killing the young Gretchen’s look-alikes. Castle informed him that he knew why he killed others and not Gretchen — so that she could see the revenge that he was exacting on her, letting her live with that knowledge.

Meanwhile, Kate went to where Amy was, but couldn’t find her there at all.

Back at the precinct, Gates let Tyson go as the tooth DNA didn’t match him at all. He and Nieman then walked out of the precinct hand in hand. As they waited for the elevator, Castle realized that Ed Turner, the name of the homeless man who had called in Susan’s murder, was an anagram for the word “returned.” Castle then realized, as the two were always one step ahead of them, that they had both intended to be there at the precinct for a reason.

Meanwhile, Kate received a phone call in which the song “We will Meet Again” was played on the other line, and was suddenly injected in the shoulder, causing her to fall into a wheelchair.

Back at the precinct, Castle realized that they just might be targeting Kate, who wasn’t there, and tried to call her on her phone, but it only went to voicemail. Afterwards, in the elevator, Nieman got a call in which a girl told her that “it was done”; and before the doors closed, Tyson winked at them.
