‘Castle’ Recap and Spoilers: ‘PhDead’ Recap and What To Expect in ‘What Lies Beneath’

“Castle” Season 8 Episode 3 “PhDead” aired last Monday, Oct. 5, 2015  at 10:00 p.m.  on ABC. In this episode, Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) decided to help out in solving cases side by side with the Twelfth Precinct in the hopes of rekindling the spark that he and Captain Kate Beckett (Stana Katic), as he had won her over by doing just that. Along with Alexis Castle (Molly C. Quinn), Castle helps them solve the murder of a college student, who it turns out, had more than one deadly secret. Also, Spoiler TV and ABC have released a promotional video and a press release on the next episode. WARNING: This article will contains spoilers for “Castle” Season 8 Episode 3 “PhDead” and Episode 4 “What Lies Beneath”. Read on to learn more about these two episodes.

The episode began with a young man running in the woods getting impaled to death on a tree with a tree branch.

The next morning, while Captain Kate Beckett (Stana Katic), Dr. Lanie Parish (Tamala Jones), Detective Kevin Ryan (Seamus Dever) and Detective Javier “Javi” Esposito (Jon Huertas) began working the case by running the victim’s prints through their databases, Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion). After talking to his new Home Improvement System, Lucy (Aubrey Plaza), decided to solve cases alongside the Twelfth Precinct in order to remind Beckett that they work well as a team.

He then managed to bypass Lanie and saw a tattoo on the victim’s arm in the morgue, which Alexis Castle (Molly C. Quinn) recognized as the mascot of Hudson University. Beckett, much to her chagrin, found her husband, who had just become a guest professor for the university. There, she also learned that the victim, Peter Garber, was a recipient of the Dean’s Fellowship Award for that year.

Ryan and Esposito, despite being warned by Beckett not to cooperate with Castle, teamed up with Alexis and Castle in order to talk to Scott Powell (Justin Prentice). He had been turned in by Peter after Scott’s hazing of younger members landed in the hospital.

Alexis then discovered that Scott had helped Peter find an apartment, which he had used to have an affair with someone.

In order to learn more about this, Alexis went undercover at a Halloween party and memorial for Peter, where Castle, ended up challenging a guy staring at Alexis to a game of beer pong. He learned that Peter had been spending time with Dr. Barbara Lillstrom (Christine Adams), the head of the university’s psychology department. The party was then broken up by Beckett.

The party was then broken up by Beckett, who had realized that Ryan and Esposito had been teaming up with Castle.

Afterwards, thanks to Vikram Singh (Sunkrish Bala), who was now the precinct’s digital investigator so that they could continue working on who had ordered a hit squad to kill them, Beckett visited the mysterious Michael Smith (Geoff Pierson) who had helped her and Castle out before when she was trying to track down Senator William Bracken (Jack Coleman).

However, this time, she needed help finding the killer of Alison Hyde, a mysterious tall man. Smith then advised her to drop the case. He suggested that the drug shipments didn’t end with Vulcan Simmons- all she had to do was find their unique signature.

Meanwhile, Alexis and Castle ended up getting imprisoned in what looked like a reenactment of the Stanford Prison Experiment, after tracking Lillstrom down to that place. He then managed to get him, Alexis, and the girl beside them out and arrested Lillstrom.

At the twelfth, they realized that the experiment had been funded by the military, which Beckett used to discover that Dean Carla Feller (Kelly Rowan) had been having an affair with Peter, which was why he had gotten the fellowship.

Castle and Beckett then returned to the experimental prison, where after having an honest moment together and where Beckett admitted that she still loved him, they discovered that Peter had escaped with the help of a fellow inmate, in order to reach the ventilation system in the ceilings of the cells, who also most probably murdered him.

They later realized that Emily, the girl beside Peter’s cell, had helped him escape and had just lost it in the woods, especially as she had needed the fellowship more than Peter did.

Later, Beckett told Vikram that she was still in, and that they needed to close their case fast.

However, Beckett’s hopes that Castle will stay away will not be coming true, as seen in the promotional video for the next episode, “What Lies Beneath” on Spoiler TV. Castle and Ryan and Esposito tackle a case that has everything to do with secrets, lies and the truth. Also, Castle, in the promotional video, mentioned how a lie within a marriage can be the ultimate betrayal.

According to official press release on ABC, they will be solving the murder of one of Castle’s favorite authors. However, he will soon learn that the truth behind it all, may not be something he would have wanted to know.

And that was the recap for “Castle” Season 8 Episode 3 “PhDead”, and all the spoilers for the next episode “What Lies Beneath.”
