Read only if you want to learn more about Movie News Guide’s (MNG) spoilers on Episode 5 “Elevate Me Later,” including a recap of Episode 4 “Silence Kit.”
Previously on “Covert Affairs” (“Silence Kit” air date: July 15, 2014), our favorite CIA team — Annie Walker (Piper Perabo) and Auggie Anderson (Christopher Gorham) — paid a visit to Auggie’s friend, former CIA agent Robert Bateman. Bateman had a lead for them on the identity of The Postman — the man who the Chicago bomber Borz Altan met and who gave him inside information about the secret CIA Chicago facility. The Postman was revealed to be Wilson Harris. Things got complicated as the pair learned that Wilson Harris was a high-ranking NSA Agent.
As Annie staked out the Harris residence, she received a phone call from none other than Ryan McQuaid (Nic Bishop). McQuaid asked how she liked his present and asked her out to a black-tie dinner happening that very night — The Initiative for National Progress dinner — where others in the team, such as Joan Campbell (Kari Matchett), Arthur Campbell (Peter Gallagher), Calder Michaels (Hill Harper) and Auggie were headed. Auggie, just so happened to be the plus one of the lovely Hayley Price of the NCTC, with whom he was starting a tentative relationship with.
Annie was able to tail Wilson Harris to his psychotherapist’s office. However, while tailing his car, she ended up in a very convenient and coincidental car accident.
At the hospital, it was revealed that she had a mild concussion — a fact that her handler, Auggie, was concerned about. However, Annie was concerned with bigger things, getting back into Harris’ psychotherapist’s office and wondering how she would keep her heart condition out of the medical records.
Auggie, noticing something amiss, finally confronted Annie about her four-month absence and her secret. She told him that while she was running one time, she discovered a sharp pain in her chest, causing her to collapse. Knowing the situation to be serious, she had sought out help “far away from the CIA.” A flashback showed that she turned to her good friend and Mossad agent, Eyal Lanvin (Oded Fehr). They discovered that she had a serious condition caused by an infected tissue in her heart as a result of Russian double agent Lena Smith shooting her in the chest. Eyal saw this as a way for Annie to get out of the spy business, but the stubborn Annie refused to leave, saying that her work in the field is her life.
Meanwhile, bureaucracy was at its peak, as Arthur Campbell suavely charmed Senator Pearson of the Intelligence Committee into thinking of hiring McQuaid’s security firm to outsource several apparatus and personnel. Joan saw Calder exiting a coat closet with his Sidney (Nanzeen Contractor), a call girl, and warned him that “whatever she’s worth, she’s not worth it.”
Annie was able to sneak into the psychotherapist’s office and tried to use the knowledge of an extramarital affair to turn Harris’ wife, which did not work out. Auggie went back to Hayley, while Annie winded down and went back home.
And just as we thought that things were going to be calmer, it went full gear back into action as Harris Wilson appeared to confront Annie with a taser. The two fight, resulting in Annie finding some use for the gun that McQuaid had given her as she shot Wilson dead in the chest.
Later, Joan told Annie that they were able to pull some solid leads from Wilson’s laptop, which would greatly help them in their investigation of the Chicago bombing. Joan confronted an anxious Annie about her medical records, which to Annie’s huge relief have been falsified to show that she only had a mild concussion.
As Annie exited Langley for Auggie’s, McQuaid and Annie coincidentally met up in the lobby. She thanked him for the gun once more and declined his offer of having lunch out. At Auggie’s, she thanked him for falsifying the medical records, and the two were a happy working couple, as they now have full trust and support of each other.
However, how long can Annie keep her condition a secret? How will this affect her performance as a spy?
