Cowboys and Aliens Battle Smurfs for Top Box Office Spot
Studio estimates of the weekend box office have new releases Cowboys and Aliens and The Smurfs tied for the top spot with each grossing $36.2 million.
The two films have been virtually neck and neck all weekend. The Smurfs, though only playing on 3395 screens, managed a per screen average of $10,663 compared to Cowboys and Aliens which pulled in an average of $9,653 per screen on 3750 screens.
These figures are likely to change somewhat when finalized figures become available Monday afternoon, but it certainly appears that Cowboys and Aliens will not be quite as dominant as predicted and may in fact take only second place.
Last week’s top two movies, first place Captain America: The First Avenger and second place Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, fell to the third and fourth spots respectively, however, both will do well over the $20 million mark. Fifth place was taken by another new film, Crazy, Stupid, Love. The Steve Carrell romantic comedy will take in just under $20 million if estimates hold true.
The second half of the Top Ten was made up of last week’s numbers three through seven with each film dropping two to four spots.
