One of the longest crime-drama TV series has finally jumped the spin-off badwagon as they introduced Patricia Arquette as Agent Avery Ryan from the FBI’s Cyber Crime Division. “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” Season 14 Episode 21 “Kitty” (air date: April 30, 2014) began with the investigations of a rare cyber-related case that needed the help from the special FBI division.
Susan “Kitty” McDowell (Torrey DeVitto) has been caught in the middle of a cyber crime that made use of her image and video chats for evil motives. Meanwhile, Lee Berman (Gil Bellows) was McDowell’s husband and casino owner who has revealed to have a dark side. “CSI” Level 3 Supervisors D.B. Russell (Ted Danson) and Julie Finlay (Elisabeth Shue) had called for Agent Avery Ryan (Patricia Arquette) for help. They are trying to find the episode’s cyber criminal “Nebula1” played by Cheyenne Jackson.

Deadline reported on the news of having another spin-off with a tentative title, “CSI: Cyber.” It will be written by “CSI” creator Anthony E. Zuiker, producer Carol Mendelsohn and former “CSI: Miami” producer Ann Donahue.
It is also said to focus on exploring outside from the forensics-centered story line that has spanned for several years in “CSI” and the two other spin-offs, “CSI: Miami” and “CSI: NY.”
It will revolve around the works of Agent Avery Ryan (Patricia Arquette) in Quantico, VA. It was said to be inspired by producer Mary Aiken who worked as a cyber-psychologist before. If “CSI: Cyber” series would push through, it will the first time that a CSI series would have a female for the lead role.
The pilot of “CSI: Cyber” was aired as a backdoor pilot episode on “CSI” Season 14 Episode 21 “Kitty” (air date: April 30, 2014). The “CSI” franchise had cancelled their previous spin-offs that ran for several seasons. “CSI: Miami” ran from 2002 until 2012 with ten seasons while “CSI: NY” ended in 2014 with nine seasons aired since 2004.
According to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), the “Cyber” spin-off is set to be Patricia Arquette’s TV comeback since her critically-acclaimed performance in “Medium” (2005-2011). Her other noted work was as the love interest of Steve Buscemi’s character in HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire.”
The recent backdoor pilot with Arquette’s guest starring role was proved to be a success. Entertainment Weekly (EW) reported that “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” Season 14 Episode 21 “Kitty” had helped the show’s ratings with 9.9 million viewers and a 1.8 rating among adults 18-49.
“CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” Season 14 Episode 21 “Kitty” is directed by Eagle Egilsson and written by Ann Donahue, Carol Mendelsohn and Anthony E. Zuiker. After “Kitty,” “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” Season 14 Episode 22 “Dead On His Tracks” will be shown on May 7, 2014.
