CSI: Cyber Recap: Bit by Bit

“CSI: Cyber” Season 1 Episode 12 “Bit by Bit” aired last Tuesday, May 13, 2015 at 9:00 p.m. on CBS. In this episode, the team investigated a jewelry heist in which no jewelry was stolen after a power outage caused twenty five blocks in Detroit to experience a black out.  Read on to learn more about this episode.

The episode began with FBI Agent Daniel Krumitz (Charley Koontz) running into a house, and after typing something in the house’s desktop computer, came down to see FBI Special Agent Avery Ryan (Patricia Arquette) telling him to join her and his “brother”. The muzzle of a gun was then shown as he joined them.

Thirty six hours earlier, ex Black Hat hackers Raven Ramirez (Hayley Kiyoko) and Brody Nelson (Shad Moss) raced against time in order to get the power grid online as someone had hacked into the power grid and cause a twenty five block black out, which Raven thought was strange because when she had caused a black out before, she had taken out the entire state of New Hampshire. Raven then greeted Nelson as he was no longer on probation as he had been at the Cyber Division for two months already. Ryan then told FBI Special Agent Elijah Mundo (James Van Der Beek) to concentrate on any alerts happening to any of the buildings at the fringes of the blackout. They then managed to get in, but the lights weren’t on yet. Because of this, they realized that whoever had hacked into the power grid was needed a live connection to the power grid to do whatever he was doing at the moment. Nelson then wrote a malicious code into Raven’s patch so that they could trace it to whoever was doing it.

Meanwhile, inside the vault of a jewelry, their hacker took a flash drive and killed someone, the store owner’s son, who had interrupted the robbery.

The next day, the store owners informed them that their bitcoin account had been stolen. Back at the Cyber Threat Operations Center (CTOC), Krumitz informed FBI Assistant Deputy Director Simon Sifter (Peter MacNicol) that he had tracked the stolen bitcoin account to the deep web bitcoin ledger, but discovered that strangely enough, to open the account, they needed two passkeys.

They then managed to locate their thief, but they were too late as he had been tortured and killed for the passkeys. They then brought in Stephen Christos (Brandon Barash), the store owner’s oldest son, who admitted to them that he had hired bitcoin bounty hunters in order to get it back as his parents had poured all their savings into it.

Back at the CTOC, they revealed that thanks to the frozen RAM chip retrieved from the thief’s computer, they discovered that he had sent the two different passkeys to two different computers without the computer owners knowing that they had the passkeys. They themselves didn’t know where the passkeys had been sent, but as they had the thief’s hard drive, they knew where it had been sent to. As a result of this, they were too late to stop them from getting the first passkey, as they had managed to break into the apartment where the computer with the first passkey was. Raven then managed to identify their bounty hunters as Henry Spitz (Lucas Kerr) and his brother, Jeremy Spitz (Blake Shields).

Using the computer that had the first passkey, they managed to connect into the botnet system, which allowed them to discover that the second passkey was in Albuquerque, New Mexico. However, as that particular user’s IP address kept on shifting, the bounty hunters ended up going to a house in Colorado, where Ryan and the others set up a trap- Krumitz placed a decoy passkey with a malicious script in it that would allow them to catch the bounty hunters red handed. Meanwhile, Raven, who went to Albuquerque, sent Nelson the real passkey. Nelson would then screencap the entire thing from the van. However, things quickly went south as Krumitz had to reconnect to the internet and discovered, when he ran down, that the Spitzes had Ryan and the home owner’s son, whom Ryan passed off as her son, at gunpoint. Krumitz was then forced to get the passkey, which allowed them to enact their plan. Nelson then disconnected the WiFi, and Elijah and his team stormed in, allowing them to arrest the bounty hunters.

Back at the CTOC, Nelson thanked Ryan for releasing all of his devices back to him, and Ryan suggested that he call his parents up. He was reluctant at first, but later on called up his father
