CSI: Cyber Recap: L0M1S

“CSI: Cyber” Season 1 Episode 9 “L0M1S” aired last Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at 10:00 p.m. on CBS. In this episode, the Cyber Division was called on to investigate a seemingly coordinated attack on nine airplanes at the same time, which led FBI Agent Daniel Krumitz (Charley Koontz) to do everything and anything he could to catch the perpetrator as the perpetrator was a legendary Black Hat whom he had been trying to catch for three years. Read on to learn more about this episode.

The episode began in the Cyber Threat Operations Center (CTOC), where FBI Special Agent Avery Ryan (Patricia Arquette), FBI Agent Daniel Krumitz (Charley Koontz), Assistant Deputy Director Simon Sifter (Peter MacNicol), ex-Black Hat Brody Nelson (Shad Moss) and FBI Special Agent Elijah Mundo (James Van Der Beek) tried to understand how the WiFi of nine different airplanes from Monument Air suddenly lost their WiFi signals. Sifter then called Homeland Security and ordered them to ground all the Monument Air flights. Krumitz then discovered the phones causing the WiFi to go down, which allowed them to cross reference it with the flight manifests, allowing them to arrest eight different suspects, including a sixteen year old girl flying to San Diego named Willa Hart (Rachael Kathryn Bell).

They then discovered that once Willa’s phone connected to the WiFi, it sent out so many data packets, that it denied everyone else access to the WiFi. Then all of a sudden, everyone in the airport started getting calls that their credit cards had either been used up or frozen, which made Ryan realize that the entire thing had been a credit card heist.

Krumitz, after discovering a unique signature in the coding of the malicious software found in the eight victim’s phones, went to them in Miami, as they were dealing with the legendary hacker known as L0M1S, who had last time caused a Defcon situation in Las Vegas. It also turned out that Krumitz had been hunting for this particular hacker for three years.

As L0M1S had probably gained access and control of everyone’s phones when people had plugged in their phones at a charging station, they told everyone to unplug their phones and to give it to Nelson, who would remove the malicious code from their phones.

Back in Washington DC, Sifter was scolded by the new Deputy Director, Colin Vickner (Jason George), who informed him to always keep him in the loop when it came to all situations.

Back at the airport, Krumitz found the black box used to “juice jack” the charging station so that L0M1S could gain control of their phones. However, Nelson informed Ryan that all of a sudden, a ransom ware, which contained a message asking for ransom money in exchange for L0M1S not releasing people’s secrets to the world, had just popped up.

Back in DC, Sifter and Collins took some heat from Senator Carla Finnis (Kristin Carey) who told them that whatever was on her phone could not get out or else her career would be ruined and would hurt her loved ones.

Back at the airport, after they cleared the area, they discovered that Rachel Carrington (Bevin Kaye), a student who worked at the airport by selling cards by the charging station had been killed. Thanks to the security footage, they discovered that she had been lured away so that L0M1S’ accomplices could put the black box in. Nelson then managed to give them the address of the people who had killed Carrington as Nelson had been able to trace it via an odd online credit card purchase.

After questioning them, they discovered that it had been an accident, and that they had been set up to take the blame as L0M1S had not shown up to collect his take of the score.

Back at the CTOC, Krumitz got upset as L0m1S kept on taunting him.

They then discovered that despite the fact that some people paid up, their information and secrets, such as the Senator’s, were released to the public. They were then interrupted by Krumitz who told them the identity of LoM1S- Willa Hart, whom they arrested. Krumitz then discovered that she had done it because she had been bored, and got even more annoyed when she sent him a taunting post card as she had been released, as she was a minor.

Ryan then confronted Krumitz, and told him that he was lucky that she didn’t have him arrested because she knew that he had illegally digitally searched L0m1S’s computer, and took a picture of Willa using her computer. He then told her that he just wanted to be able to catch L0M1S so that he wouldn’t have let Ryan down. Because of this, she left him thinking about whether his victory was worth it, knowing that he didn’t achieve it honestly.
