CSI Cyber Recap: Selfie 2.0

“CSI: Cyber” Season 1 Episode 8 “Selfie 2.0” aired last Wednesday, Apr. 22, 2015 at 10:00 p.m. on CBS. In this episode, the Cyber Division investigated a murder after a woman whose social media page kept on updating even though she was dead had been found. Meanwhile, an old face from the past forced FBI Special Avery Ryan (Patricia Arquette) to revisit some old wounds. Read on to learn more about this episode.

The episode began in the woods as the body of a woman was dumped on the ground. Around a month or two later, the body of the woman, twenty-year-old Elizabeth Marks (Rachel G. Fox), was discovered by a couple who had gone hiking in Syracuse, New York.  However, this case was routed to the Cyber Division. Elizabeth’s Friend Agenda page kept on updating even though she had been missing for around two years. Her parents hadn’t filed a missing person’s report as they believed what her posts said- that she had run away to Europe.

FBI Special Agent Avery Ryan (Patricia Arquette) then had FBI Agent Daniel Krumitz (Charley Koontz) go at least two and a half years back to see if the posted updates differed in language. It did, as her tone suddenly went from negative to positive, with signs that she was in a good relationship with someone.

Ryan was then called to the laboratory by FBI Special Agent Elijah Mundo (James Van Der Beek). Navy Captain Dr. David Ortega (Michael Irby), their medical examiner, showed them that Elizabeth had been bound at the wrists and ankles, had been stabbed seven times, and had been branded as number five. However, the branding made Ryan realize that their target didn’t mean to kill her, which meant that she was going to be replaced. However, before she could do anything else, she took a call from Trish McCarthy (Rosanna Arquette), the sister of the client she had who had been murdered, as she seemed like she was in distress.

Meanwhile, while narrowing down their search as to who the next target could be, Mundo realized that their target was abducting girls based on the 1925 Art Landry song “Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue.” A woman named Missy Bowers (Jonna Walsh) had gone missing, as her Friend Agenda posts showed that she was somewhere in Europe.

Ryan and Mundo then visited her mother. She had filed the missing persons report and assured her that they would get her back.

They then brought in a neurosurgeon whom Missy had met on an online dating site but to no avail.

Back in Washington DC, Brody Nelson (Shad Moss), Krumitz and Mundo realized that the common denominator between Missy and Elizabeth was that they didn’t turn off their location services when they took selfies. They took a lot of, which led the abductor to discover their habits making it easier to know when to get them. True enough, they discovered that a 5”2 female branded number one, had been Missy’s abductor.

Meanwhile, Assistant Deputy Directory Simon Sifter (Peter MacNicol) told Ryan to visit Trish. She had been arrested and had been placed in holding as she had tried to dig up her sister’s grave. As Ryan tried to comfort her, Trish made her realize that she was too busy “chasing ghosts” to notice what was in front of her. Because of this, she surprised Krumitz by telling him how much she appreciated him. He then told her that they had the names of all the girls who had been abducted. She told them to concentrate on Vanessa Gillerman (Grace Phipps), the abductor’s number one girl.

Ryan then convinced Vanessa’s sister, Juliet Gillerman (Aja Evans) to message Vanessa recounting what their father did to them as kids, in order to lure them out, which worked.

Inside interrogation, she told them that her “master” would never replace her. It made Ryan realize that the  target would be desperate to find another girl, and would probably go on an online dating site. He did and allowed them to get his name- Jasper Cross (Berett Rickaby), and his address.

They then managed to shoot him down after he threatened to kill all the girls inside and freed the girls.

Missy then told Ryan that Vanessa had killed Elizabeth. She had tried to call for help while they were out doing some errands for Jasper.

Later that day, Ryan and Trish both let go of Danielle McCarthy by burying some mementos in the ground with her body.
