‘Dance Moms’ Season 5 Recap: It’s Abby Vs. Cathy All Over Again

Dance Moms” Season 5 Episode 10 “The New Maddie?” aired on Tuesday, Mar. 10, 2015, at 9:00 p.m. on Lifetime. The episode kicks off with the girls and dance moms entering the studio. Read on to know what happens next.

Abby Lee Miller announces that she brought Brynn Rumfallo all the way to Pittsburgh because she has the potential.

For the performance pyramid, Nia Frazier, JoJo Siwa and Mackenzie Ziegler are at the bottom. Nia did not receive an award for her solo routine, JoJo was not hitting Abby’s expectations and Mackenzie is still praised for her comprehension skills. The upper part has Kendall Vertes and Maddie Ziegler. Abby greets Kendall “happy birthday” first. Then she says Kendall’s solo was great but not good enough for Maddie’s age division. She congratulates Maddie for helping the team to win. Lastly, Kalani Hilliker beats all the girls on top of the pyramid. She won overall high score.

Abby proceeds to tell everybody that they are joining Sheer Talent for the week in Wayne, New Jersey. She announces that her enemy Cathy Nesbitt-Stein is also attending the event.

Now, each girl is assigned a role. Abby explains that Maddie and Brynn are getting the solos. She says that Maddie’s solo is called “Vertigo” and pressures the kid by saying that Sia’s “Chandelier” was nominated for four Grammy awards. She exclaims that they are going to the Grammys. Secretly, Maddie confides that she is not going with Abby. On the other hand, Brynn will perform “Diamond in the Rough.” The group performance is called “Dance in the Rain.”

The pressure for Abby Lee Dance Company (ALDC) is to rehearse for only two days. As a preparation, Abby tells Mackenzie and Nia to bring their crowns and banner from their win at the national Sheer Talent awarding event. She suddenly gets annoyed. Then, she recalls Nia’s frown during the pyramid explanation. Holly Frazier defends her daughter that she was just listening.

Outside, Jessalynn Siwa tells Holly that Brynn never flinched on Abby’s words. She thinks Nia must do the same thing. On the other hand, Melissa Ziegler longs for peace between Holly and Abby.

Meanwhile, over at Candy Apples’ studio, Cathy talks about ALDC’s bad experience in Los Angeles. Her notorious guest choreographer is no other than Erin Babbs, Abby’s ultimate rival in LA. Cathy knows all along that Abby went back to Pittsburgh to regroup. She promises Abby’s defeat.

Back to ALDC, the original dance moms are bitter about Brynn being Abby’s potential favorite. They try to discourage Ashlee Rumfallo by saying that Abby’s special treatment to Brynn is just the “honeymoon phase.”

During Candy Apples’ rehearsals, Cathy is excited to see the look on Abby’s face when she sees Erin. However, not everything is sunshine and rainbows in the Candy Apples because Cathy also has her favorites and weaklings. Cathy thinks her dancers are not focused enough. She describes her dancer, Lucas, acting “squirrelly.” Like Holly and Abby, Lucas’ mom, Brigette, notices Cathy’s VIP treatment for some dancers.

Is Abby 100 percent happy with Maddie’s accomplishments? The outspoken dance instructor finally notices that her favorite student is “being pulled in so many directions.” She thinks Brynn can be as good as her – even better. Meanwhile, Ashlee tells the dance moms that Abby told Brynn that she is “perfect” and “was put on earth to dance.”

Finally, ALDC is in NJ. While ALDC fans are chanting Abby’s name, Cathy uses her bullhorn to make noise. She even takes pictures with the rival studio’s fans.

Inside the venue, Cathy breaks the silence when she told Abby that Erin is her choreographer. Abby calls her a “snake” and walks out. Cathy is very pleased. However, when Brigette wished ALDC good luck, Cathy gets furious.

After the performances, it is time for the awarding. Sorry, Abby, but Brynn just gets second place for her solo. As expected (and thankfully), Maddie becomes the champion. Abby suddenly forgets about her previous doubts on Maddie that she stands up and applauds loudly. Her smile becomes wider when it was announced that ALDC is the champion for the group competition. Cathy claims some conspiracy going on. However, Abby relies on history itself, winning it all over again.

Outside the auditorium, Cathy proceeds to discourage some dance moms. She tells Jill that her daughter does not have a solo. Jill says Kendall is dancing with winners. Suddenly, Brigette attempts to defend the ALDC moms. Cathy completely loses her temper, so she kicks out Lucas and Brigette from Candy Apples. Brigette and Lucas are cool with it and walk out.

It is nice to see ALDC being festive and fun again after the depressing LA visit. Melissa and Jill use the bullhorn to announce that ALDC beat Cathy. Abby congratulates the girls and says that Brynn is not coming back temporarily because of personal reasons. The Ziegler girls take their turn on the bullhorn and chant A-L-D-C.
