The episode began with Jack Murdock (John Patrick Hayden) running to his nine year old son, Matthew “Matt” Murdock (Skylar Gaertner). He had gotten involved in a car accident, in which he had saved an old man’s life by pushing him away. However, Matt wasn’t as lucky as he had gotten doused in the radioactive material in the barrels that had gotten hit, causing him to become blind.
Years later, a grown up Matt Murdock went to confession and told his confessor that he was looking for forgiveness for what he was going to do. Afterwards, he, dressed up in black, with a black mask, fought off four men who were trying to smuggle several girls in a shipping container. This caused him to wake up late, much to the dismay of his best friend and partner, Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson). Before meeting up with him and the real estate agent, he bribed a good friend a desk sergeant to let them know if there were any interesting cases that they could take.
While they were getting settled in, Foggy’s friend called up with an interesting case. There had been a homicide with only one suspect and witness-Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll).
At the interrogation room, Karen learned that she was their very first client, and Foggy tried to leave after learning that she had the money to pay them. However, Matt insisted that they stay.
They then discovered that she worked for Union Allied Construction and had asked out the victim, a lawyer named Daniel Fisher out for drinks. After meeting him at a bar, she woke up to find him dead. She discovered that she was holding a bloody knife. Matt, after focusing on her heartbeat, as he could hear it due to his radar-like sense, realized that he was telling the truth.
However, that night, she was almost killed by a guard named Clyde Furnum (J. Tucker Smith). He had been threatened with his daughter’s death as he owed money to the employer of Wesley (Toby Leonard Moore).
The next day, Matt convinced Foggy that something was off as the District Attorney hadn’t charged Karen yet, and due to the incident that night, managed to get her released. She then told them that she had gone to Daniel. She had noticed that her boss, Mr. McClintock, the head of the finance department at Union Allied had been embezzling from the company. It was after clicking on a file that wasn’t met with her, as she was just a secretary.
As she couldn’t go back to her apartment, Matt took her in for the night, and asked her if she had kept a copy of the file, as that was the only logical reason why she had been kept alive. However, she told him that she didn’t have it, even though it was obvious to Matt that she was lying.
Elsewhere, on a rooftop, Leland Owlsley (Bob Gunton), Madame Gao (Wai Ching Ho), Nobu (Peter Shinkoda) and the Chechnyans in charge of supplying girls met Wesley and told them of their run in with the masked vigilante, whom Wesley took interest in.
Meanwhile, Karen went back to her apartment, and after getting the USB with the file on it, was attacked by an assassin. She was then saved by Matt, as the vigilante, who fought with him. He almost gave up after he got thrown out the window. However, after remembering how his father always encouraged him to never give up, he won as he used a chain nearby to disable him, with Karen witnessing the fight.
He then left the assassin and the USB on the steps of the New York Bulletin post so that it would come out as the headline the next day.
Because of this, Karen was released and decided to pay Foggy and Matt back by being their secretary.
Meanwhile, Wesley arranged things for his employer so that their assassin, Mr. McClintock, and Furnum would die mysterious deaths. His employer then instructed him to keep tabs on Foggy and Matt, just in case.
Later, as Matt trained at Fogwell’s Gym, Madame Gao oversaw her heroin operation, Nobu looked at the blueprint of the reconstruction of Hell’s Kitchen.
Later that night, on a rooftop, dressed in black, Matt listened to the city. He honed in on a young boy screaming for his father, as he had been kidnapped by the two Chechnyans, Anatoly (Gideon Emery) and Vladimier (Nikolai Nikolaeff).
