“Defiance” Season 2 Episode 4 “Beasts of Burden” aired on July 10, 2014. It was directed by Allan Kroeker and Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer. It all started with the surprising ambush of Mayor Niles Pottinger (James Murray), Berlin and their group while they were shooting for another propaganda. It was all about the state-of-the-art laser equipment that could be used in Rafe’s mines. Berlin was knocked out, while Pottinger was stripped and humiliated.
After his intimate moment with Amanda, Nolan (Grant Bowler) was tapped to start off an investigation about the vicious ambush that had happened. Niles told about the masks that the riders used in killing six of his E-Rep men. On the other hand, Berlin told Tommy (Dewshane Williams) about the damaged footage she got during the incident.
Nolan went to Rafe (Graham Greene) to ask him about his connection in the attacks. He told Rafe that he should let Josef leave Defiance for good. When Nolan got Josef a ticket, the kid went to Berlin for the footage. Nolan and the others learned that Josef kidnapped Berlin. Nolan was determined on getting both of them and stop from doing more mistakes.
He went to Rafe again, and he was held at gunpoint by Josef. Rafe tried to convince his nephew to leave now. Nolan uncuffed him and told him to run for his life. Unfortunately, a gunman had gotten Josef, and he was shot down.
There was a lot of intense moments between Nolan and Tommy. Despite saving Berlin, Tommy continued to question Nolan’s motive. Pottinger told Nolan that his deed will not go unpunished in the future even if it breaks Amanda’s heart. Pottinger then went to Rafe and gave him an eviction notice.
Meanwhile, Datak (Tony Curran) talked to Stahma (Jaime Murray) about a possible partnership between them. It was after Stahma increased their business profit by 20%. Datak also got the chance to talk with his son, Alak (Jesse Rath), who wanted to pursue his music career. He was the one who killed several soldiers as sacrifices. He also punished Alak by crushing his hand. Stahma and Christie (Nicole Munoz) got angry over Alak’s punishment. In the end, Datak was seen being beaten outside, while Stahma, Alak and their business partners watched.
