Disney Sets Dates for ‘Zootopia’ and ‘Moana’

Entertainment Weekly (EW) reported that Disney slates the releases of "Zootopia" and "Moana" in 2016, following up the success in the box-office weekend of "Big Hero 6." Read on for more details on this story.

"Zootopia" is set in a world where anthropomorphic animals live in suburban neighborhoods like Tundratown, Sahara Square, Little Rodenta and Burrowborough. It follows the uncanny friendship of Nick Wilde, a fast-talking fox and a resident of Zootopia who goes on the run when he's framed for a crime he didn't commit. Lt. Judy Hops, Zootopia's top cop, a self-righteous rabbit who is hot on Wilde’s tail. When both become targets of a conspiracy, they're forced to team up and discover that even natural enemies can become best friends.

It is directed by Byron Howard, who have directed previous Disney animations such as "Bolt" and "Tangled." Writer Jared Bush provided the script while Jason Bateman is set to voice a character in the film.

"Zootopia" hits the theaters on March 4, 2016.

Next up is "Moana," Disney’s female-lead South Pacific adventure set in the ancient Oceania continent. It follows the adventures of a protagonist named Moana Waialiki, a sea-voyaging enthusiast, the only daughter of a chief in a long line of navigators. During her journey to the fabled island, she sought the help of Maui, the legendary demi-god. Together, they will take on "action-packed voyage in which they encounter enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds, and ancient folklore."

Disney veterans Ron Clements and John Musker, who have worked on previous Disney titles such as “Aladdin,” The Little Mermaid” and “The Princess and the Frog,” will be re-teaming up to direct the pic. “Moana” will be Clements and Musker's first computer-animated film.

Musker describes the pic heroine as “is indomitable, passionate and a dreamer with a unique connection to the ocean itself – She's the kind of character we all root for, and we can't wait to introduce her to audiences.”

Other animated pics the studio have on their sleeves are “Inside Out” starring the voice of Amy Poehler and “The Good Dinosaur,” which are set to hit the big screens in 2015.
