Disney on the Works for the Live-Action Movie of ‘Mulan’
With the last few years of recreating the Disney animation classics into live-action movies, Disney once again plans to create another live-action movie based from another Disney classic. This time, get ready to see a brave young woman out to save her family and the whole of China! Read on for more details.
The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reports that Disney Studios has bought a script of “Mulan.” It is based on the Chinese story and poem of Hua Mulan, from its writers Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek. On board as the upcoming movie’s producers are Chris Bender and J.C. Spink. As of now, they are keeping their eyes out for a director. The movie’s release date and casting have also not yet been announced.
Directed by Barry Cook and Tony Bancroft, the 1998 animated version of “Mulan” tells the story of the titular character (voiced by Ming-Na Wen, with her singing voice done by Lea Salonga) who disguised herself as a man to replace her ailing father. With her dragon guardian, Mushu and the training of her captain Li Shang, Mulan joins in the war against the invading Huns, all the while struggling with herself and keeping her identity secret.
“Mulan” went on to earn $304.3 million worldwide. It also earned nominations for the Golden Globe Awards and the Academy Awards. In 2005, Disney created a direct-to-DVD sequel, simply entitled ‘Mulan II’.
For the past years, Disney has been releasing live-action movies of most beloved animated classics, most of which having their storylines and characters changed. “Maleficent,” a remake of ‘Sleeping Beauty’ starring Angelina Jolie as Maleficent was released in May 2014 and earned $758.4 million worldwide. For 2015, a live-action remake of “Cinderella” was released three weeks ago and has brought in around $336.2 million internationally.
Coming up onscreen for the next few years are Jon Favreau’s “The Jungle Book,” the “Alice in Wonderland” sequel, “Dumbo” by Tim Burton, and “Beauty and the Beast” by Bill Condon starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens.
