Doctor Who Series 8 Recap: The Caretaker
“Doctor Who” Series 8 Episode 6 “The Caretaker” aired on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014, at 8:00 p.m. on BBC America. The whole Danny and Clara thing has been going on for quite a while now, and yet with the Doctor’s involvement in their relationship, we don’t know where it’s headed. Will Clara be with Danny, or will there be a romantic involvement between Clara and the Doctor in the near future? Right now, it seems impossible because the Doctor has been acting like Clara’s father.
Clara has been juggling her time with Danny and her time with the Doctor. She was trying her hardest for the two to never meet again or be in the same room at once because she knows that it’s for their own good. It was so surprising when the Doctor told her that they are not going on any adventures that day, and she can do whatever she wants. Clara was so surprised but also grateful because she could spend time with Danny.
It’s strange, though, when the Doctor introduced the Caretaker to Clara, John Smith. Clara was curious, but then the Doctor reassured her that the reason the Caretaker was there because children in the planet were in danger. He told Clara to pretend that she doesn’t know him, so she did.
The scene changed, and we saw a policeman coming out of an alien cannon in an abandoned building just nearby. Just when Clara was about to spend time with Danny, Danny tried to have a conversation with the Doctor and revealed that he is a soldier, and we all know that the Doctor hates soldiers. Clara got panicky because he could feel the tension brewing. Keeping the whole thing from getting worse, she tried sending Danny away but got pulled aside by her colleague, and the Doctor mistaken him as Clara’s boyfriend. It was so surprising because the Doctor took an interest in him right away.
Being the Caretaker in this episode, the Doctor was taking his role very seriously by putting devices around the school. Clara was getting curious to know what the Doctor was up to, but just like what he said earlier, he didn’t want to reveal it because he wanted Clara to enjoy her day. Of course, he didn’t live up to that promise because he revealed it to Clara and told her that he’s trying to catch Skovox Blitzer robot and then trap him with the use of the devices that he has planted all over the school. He then told Clara that he got everything together, so Clara doesn’t need to take part of it anymore.
That night, Danny came across a device that the Doctor has planted and removed it. The Doctor has finally lured the robot into the auditorium. Just when he was about to activate all the devices that he planted, he was surprised that it didn’t work. It was because Danny removed the other device. Danny then barged into the auditorium and caught off guard; the robot attacked him. Luckily, Clara’s curiosity got the better of her, and she was still willing to sneak on the Doctor to know what he’s really up to. Then she saw Danny and saved him from getting sucked into the vortex.
The Doctor was very upset of what Danny did. Since that happened, instead of sending the robot a billion years into the future, it got placed for three days only.
With what occurred, Danny realized that Clara wasn’t who she claims to be as well as the Doctor. The Doctor then realized that Danny was really Clara’s boyfriend, and you can just imagine how much he hated it. Clara and the Doctor showed Danny the Tardis. Clara led Danny home. When they got home, Clara came clean and even gave him an invisibility watch to use the next day because she planned on taking him along with her when she visits the Doctor in the Tardis. The Doctor, who can sense that something was up, sent Clara right away on an adventure and Clara refused, which made her even more obvious.
Danny revealed himself and got into a fight with the Doctor. The Doctor sent him out of the Tardis, and Clara followed Danny. Then appeared the student from earlier this episode who was asking the Doctor if he is an alien. The Doctor told her that he is. The next day, there was a parent-teacher conference happening in the school, and the Doctor got all panicky when the robot revealed himself. He asked for Clara’s help. Clara was able to get the robot back to the Tardis. However, the Doctor wasn’t successful in trapping the robot and was about to attack him when Danny came in and saved the day.
As much as he wanted to keep it to himself, the Doctor gave Danny the credit because he saved his life, and he was left with no choice but to accept him as Clara’s boyfriend. When Clara and Danny were back at his apartment, Danny talked to Clara that the Doctor only acted like that because he wanted to see Clara’s full potential and told Clara that if the Doctor pushed her too hard, he should come to him.
