Negotiations for Joaquin Phoenix to play Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme have ended. Phoenix won’t be playing the surgeon turned master of the mystical arts, Stephen Strange. With no one to play the part, Marvel has begun casting its wide net for potential Doctor Stranges. Moreover, Variety has listed out six hopefuls rumored to play the part: Jared Leto, Oscar Isaac, Matthew McConaughey, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ethan Hawke and Ewan McGregor.
However, it seems a new player has just joined Marvel’s shortlist of candidates for the role. According to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), Ryan Gosling has met up with Marvel Studios to discuss the titular role for Doctor Strange. It is still unclear if the 33-year-old actor will take up the role as he is rumored of having ties for two other pics, namely Summit’s “The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero” and DC’s “Suicide Squad.”
Johnny Depp was set to star in the Dean Parisot directed pic "Houdini." However, he will be filming for the new installment of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tells No Tales,” which will be filming for half a year in 2015.
Meanwhile, DC’s “Suicide Squad,” to be directed by David Ayer, is still in its early development stages but is rumored to have an A-list ensemble including the likes of Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Tom Hardy.
“Doctor Strange” was created by the writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko and made his first ever appearance in Strange Tales #110 in 1963. Originally a gifted surgeon, the egotistical Dr. Stephen Strange’s life changed when he got in a car accident that badly damaged the nerves of his hands. Seeking the help of the Ancient One to heal his hands, the surgeon turned sorcerer was then trained instead to be proficient in the verse of Mystic Arts, becoming Earth’s greatest and most powerful mystic and master of the arcane arts, the “Sorcerer Supreme, tasked to defend the realm against demons and mystical forces such as Baron Mordo, Dormammu, Shuma-Gorath, the Undying Ones and Nightmare.
“Doctor Strange” is scheduled to begin shooting in May 2015 at Pinewood-Shepperton studios in UK for a scheduled for release on July 8, 2016.
