Dolce & Gabbana Under Fire as Celebrities Join in Boycott After IVF Babies Comment

It’s amazing how one comment can change one’s life. But then again, the comment Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana of the brand name Dolce & Gabbana made regarding IVF babies made such a stir even among fellow celebrities that they’re probably off to a long day ahead.

On Saturday, March 14, Sir Elton John took to Instagram to say his piece regarding an interview of the Italian magazine Panorama with Dolce & Gabbana creators Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana that slammed IVF babies and calling them ‘synthetic’. As it turned out, despite them being gay, the designers are strong supporters of a traditional, heterosexual family bonded by a child through natural pregnancy.

Unfortunately for them, Sir John has two IVF boys with his husband David Furnish, and is undoubtedly angry over their comment. He posted a photo of the two designers and captioned it with “How dare you refer to my beautiful children as ‘synthetic’”. He then went on to saying that they should be ashamed of criticizing IVF that is able to give joy to both straight and gay people by helping them become parents. In the end, he announced that he shall never wear anything of Dolce & Gabbana again.

Following Sir John’s comment and using the hashtag #BoycottDolceGabbana, many celebrities also took to Twitter to show their support. Victoria Beckham, a friend of Sir John, was among those who started it off, with her post, “Sending love to Elton David Zachary Elijah & all the beautiful IVF babies x vb”. Other celebrities included Courtney Love, Matt Lucas, Ricky Martin, Dominic Monaghan, and many more. In addition to this, other parents and now-grown IVF children also took to the social media to talk back at the designers.

In a statement with the Associated Press, Gabbana said that he was just voicing his own opinion regarding the matter and has no intention to judge anyone. Dolce, on the other hand, said he based his personal views of a traditional family on his own traditional Sicilian family and admitted he expressed his opinion without thinking of others’.
