DeGeneres made it public that she was a lesbian with her role in sitcom, “Ellen” in 1997. She said, initially “I didn’t think I’d be coming out on a show, ever.”

She disclosed that at California’s Esalen Institute, she enrolled for a course, which was about bringing change to the subconscious mind’s inner dialogue. She said, “It was scary and crazy and what came out of listening to what I had been saying to myself. ”

DeGeneres struggled with her thoughts there. Her mind asked her several questions like, would she stay famous if she disclosed? She was also apprehensive that people might not like her if they came to know that she was gay. In the show, she said that she was really tired of pretending to be who she was not in reality, so that people would like her.

DeGeneres is reckoned as the first celebrity who opened up about her sexuality to people. In 2008, DeGeneres tied the knot with actress Portia de Rossi. She has also launched a line of children’s clothing recently. One quirk of this is, her line of clothes does not confirm to gender stereotypes.
