Meanwhile, Hakeem’s own shoot was placed in jeopardy after pictures of Tiana (Serayah) and her girlfriend became a trending topic. Cookie Lyon (Taraji P. Henson) testified against notorious drug dealer Frank Gathers and thought that she was going to be killed after finding a rose on her doorstep, which was Gathers’ trademark. Read on to learn more about this episode.

The episode opened with a small press conference on the red carpet, where Hakeem Lyon (Bryshere Gray) announced to the world that his new video, “Drip Drop,” was going to be released very soon. Tiana then went back to her apartment, where she met up with her girlfriend.

Meanwhile, in the Lyon mansion, Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) proposed to his girlfriend, Anika Calhoun (Grace Gealey), who accepted his proposal.

The next day, Jamal Lyon (Jessie Smollet) brought Cookie to a studio in the ghetto, where he could only afford to have it for one day so that he could record his hit single. However, Cookie immediately had to step out as Agent Carter (Nealla Gordon) kept on contacting her, as she was trying to protect her, and convinced her to testify in front of a grand jury, as the proceedings would be kept secret.

At Empire, Hakeem impressed his father with his vision for his new video, in which he told his father that he needed to recreate himself, and told him that he had to release it before Jamal released his single. Andre Lyon (Trai Byers) then began to worry about the budget for Hakeem’s video because it would go over budget, but Lucious told him to find a way to get the money, because if not, he would consider Andre to be useless. Andre then went to Rhonda’s (Kaitlin Doubleday) fashion shoot for advice, and she showed him that she had caught Tiana with her girlfriend, India, behind some racks of clothing. They then recorded it so that they could release it at a moment’s notice.

At the grand jury, while Cookie testified, she remembered what had happened that day. She remembered that she had sold several of Frank Gathers’ drugs to a man, who, as it turned out, was an undercover FBI Agent. The FBI then had come out; and before she was even arrested, Gathers had driven by and shot the undercover agent dead. Afterwards, Cookie became scared and nervous because she knew that Agent Carter couldn’t protect her from Gathers, even if he was in prison.

Meanwhile, at Lucious’ office, Andre told his father that the only way to get more money for the video was to have Tiana appear in the video, and told him that he could handle Cookie. After he left, Vernon Turner (Malik Yoba) informed Lucious that in order to go public, they needed a doctor to sign a certificate of good health for Lucious. Lucious then told Vernon that he had asked Anika to marry him, and remembered fondly the engagement party that he had thrown for Cookie before during their anniversary.

Later, during dinner with Anika’s parents, in which they broke the news that they were engaged and that Lucious had ALS, Lucious asked Anika’s father to commit fraud for him so that Anika would become a billionaire. If the IPO didn’t go through, Anika would be left with nothing. Because of this, Anika’s father agreed to give him a bill of good health.

Meanwhile, Cookie got scared after seeing a rose on her doorstep which meant that Frank Gathers was going to kill her. After she put a gun into her purse, along with a roll of cash, she got surprised as Andre had suddenly shown up at her doorstep. He then asked Cookie’s permission to have Tiana be in Hakeem’s video. She told him that she would only allow that to happen if Andre got her a seat on Empire’s board. Afterwards, she got into a taxi and asked the driver to take her to Philadelphia. On the way, she tried to call Agent Carter, but to no avail. She then called up Jamal, who needed her help because he couldn’t figure out how to change up a part of his song. After letting her hear it over the phone, she gave him some advice and told him that she would get there as soon as she could.

At the Empire studios, Hakeem thanked Tiana for helping him out with his video and showed his friends the wonders of visual effects, which was why he was filming with a green screen. While Tiana was learning the choreography for the video, Rhonda leaked the video of Tiana and her girlfriend. Afterwards, Andre manipulated some of Hakeem’s freeloading friends to rob Jamal, saying that he was wearing an expensive watch in a ghetto studio in front of them.

However, after Porsha (Ta’Rhonda Jones) discovered Tiana’s video online, she showed it to Hakeem who became furious at Tiana. However, she didn’t understand what the big problem was as she knew that Hakeem was having an affair with an older woman.

Meanwhile, Cookie warned her younger sister, Carol (Tasha Smith), that she might find herself in trouble as well. Because of that, they asked and paid Jamil, a relative of theirs, to “take care” of Teddy McNally, one of Gathers’ known hit men.

At the recording studio, the sound engineers praised Jamal’s song. However, as he was going back in to rerecord a part of the song, Hakeem’s friends came in with guns and robbed them at gunpoint. As one of the engineers tried to fight back, he got shot in the arm. Luckily, the studio owner came in and forced them to leave at gunpoint. This caused a problem as they didn’t want to allow Jamal to overextend his stay there because of what happened. However, after Cookie talked to the owner, they allowed Jamal to stay. He then got an entire band and some vocalists to come in and told the owner that he would be able to teach everyone and record the single in one day, which he managed to do. When Cookie came back to see his progress, she asked the sound engineer to make sure that Jamal’s voice stood out. After they heard it, they rejoiced as Cookie knew that Jamal had his hit single.

Meanwhile, Cookie agreed to talk to Tiana for Hakeem and convinced her to bring India to the set. Lucious then convinced Hakeem to cooperate with Tiana for now and to handle their personal issues after the video was shot.

That night, Jamal showed up in Hakeem’s place and confronted him as he knew that those two men who had robbed him in his studio were his friends. Jamal believed that Hakeem had sent them to ruin his session. As he got closer, physically to Hakeem, Hakeem pushed him back. Jamal then punched him and warned him not to underestimate him. Hakeem then called up Andre to help him push up the release of the video so that it could be released before Jamal’s single was released. Andre then became disturbed after learning that someone had gotten shot as result of the robbery that he had orchestrated.

Meanwhile, Cookie was surprised that Lucious came over to visit her. He thanked her for talking to Tiana and told her that they had just finished wrapping up Hakeem’s video. She then told him to be excited for Jamal’s own single, which was already ready to be released. He then told her, to her surprise, that he had given her an anniversary present earlier that day. It turned out that she forgot that it was their anniversary and realized that it was Lucious who had left the rose, and not Teddy McNally. She then called Carol to cancel the hit on Teddy, but it was too late as he had already been killed.
