“The Equalizer” Synopsis:
Robert McCall (Washington) was a former black ops commando who faked his death in exchange of a “normal” life. He works at Home Mart in Boston and lives a quiet life until he met the prostitute Teri (Moretz). Teri’s pimp is a Russian who is part of a mob. When she ends up in a hospital after being severely beaten, McCall traces the lair of the mob and negotiates for Teri’s freedom. A fight ensued, and you can tell what happens next.
With the skills he obtained from his previous work, McCall can impressively size up a situation and walk away from it, almost unscathed. Meanwhile, Teddy (Csokas), top fixer from the mob and McCall’s opponent, will do everything to seize McCall.
“The Equalizer” Review:
As of this writing, the film scored 68 percent from Rotten Tomatoes and 54 percent on Metacritic. The film received mix reviews from top critics — suffice to say that some liked it while some did not.
Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter (THR) did like the Denzel-starrer film as he mentioned in his review that it was the most thrilling and stylish film in very long while.
“The Russians are coming and Denzel is waiting for them in a bang-up action thriller that should launch a franchise,” wrote McCarthy in his review in THR.
Although TheWrap’s James Rocchi has referred to the film as empty, he still finds it entertaining. He went on to commend Washington and Fuqua for bringing out the best in each other and for the audience’s advantage.
“Willfully empty but wildly entertaining, ‘The Equalizer’ stands out from its peers like a wolf among lapdogs, as Fuqua and Washington bring out the best in each other for the benefit of the audience,” wrote Rocchi in his review in TheWrap.
