BBC Two’s psychological TV drama “The Fall” is getting a third season. The network also released a teaser to the show led by Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan. Read on for the details.

Tracking down serial killer Paul Spector (Dornan) comes to a conclusion in the third season ahead of the renewal of the BBC Two series. This will be the show’s final installment, according to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), and will cover five episodes.

The second season ended with a cliffhanger. Stella Gibson (Anderson) desperately tries to save Spector from dying. It was after being unexpectedly shot by Jimmy, who was seeking vengeance against the serial killer (Read recap here). Broadcast in over 200 countries, including the popular streaming site Netflix in the U.S., “The Fall” earned about 3.3 to 3.6 million viewers on average in the second season.

“The cliffhanger ending of season two was conceived in the hope of further exploring the characters and the themes that are at the heart of The Fall. We’re grateful to be given this opportunity by the BBC,” said Allan Cubitt, the show’s creator, in the THR report.

Back in Jan. 2015 at a Television Critics Association event, Cubitt said that he is confident about a third season renewal. Meanwhile, the show’s star Gillian Anderson has always been vocal about their ideas for how the story will come to a close.

BBC Two commissioned season three through its controllers Kim Shillinglaw and Ben Stephenson, with BBC Ireland’s Stephen Wright as executive producer. Shillinglaw said that with its renewal, the network continues to demonstrate its commitment to delivering distinctive drama series it is known for.

“The story is far from over. Allan has known the end game from the beginning — the cat and mouse game between Gillian and Jamie has one last act to play out. Who will win?” asked Stephenson in the same report.

“The Fall” first aired in Ireland and the U.K. in May 2013. The second season premiered in Nov. 2014. Shot in Belfast, the third series is expected to air next year.
