Feds Take Up Expendables 3 Leak Probe After Lionsgate Files Lawsuit

Three weeks before its theatrical release, a DVD-quality copy of the upcoming ensemble action film, “The Expendables 3,” starring Sylvester Stallone has been leaked online. A federal investigation has now been opened when Lionsgate, the film’s distributor, has filed lawsuits regarding the matter. Read on for more details on this story.

According to Deadline, Lionsgate is pressing charges when their upcoming ensemble action movie, “The Expendables 3,” was leaked into the public through illegal file sharing sites. A federal investigation has been opened with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) picking up on the case. Lionsgate has been making calls to several law-enforcement agencies to help track the pirates responsible for leaking the full digital version of the film. Pirated copies of “The Expendables 3” have begun to show up on torrent-sharing sites on Wednesday, July 23, 2014. By Thursday, July 24, 2014, downloads have started to peak. The movie had been downloaded 250,000 on the first day, 189,052 times worldwide by 6:00 p.m. Eastern Thursday, and 42,216 downloads coming from the U.S.


The U.S. Customs is merged with USDHS and is responsible for investigating illegally distributed copyright materials. It has actually acquired the domain names of websites that are used to illegally distribute media.

“It is our policy to neither confirm or deny that an investigation is underway, unless or until it results in some type of public enforcement action,” said the ICE public affairs officer, as published on Deadline.

File-sharing sites such as Swantshare.com, Hulkfile.eu, Limetorrents.com,Played.to, Billionuploads.com and Dotsemper.com were advised by the studio to remove the movie from their site.

“The Expendables 3” is a sequel to the 2012 action film, “The Expendables 2,” and it features returning cast members such as Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews and Arnold Schwarzenegger. They will be joined by Kelsey Grammer, Antonio Banderas, Wesley Snipes, Glen Powell, Ronda Rousey, Mel Gibson, Victor Ortiz, Robert Davi, Kellan Lutz and Harrison Ford.

“The Expendables” grossed over $275 million worldwide, while the second installment took in more than $300 million. “The Expendables 3” is the third installment in the blockbuster “The Expendables” series and is set to be released on Aug. 15, 2014.
