Former Miss Venezuela Monica Spear Shot Dead During a Highway Robbery
Telenovela star and former Miss Venezuela Monica Spear was shot and killed with her ex-husband on the Valencia-Puerto Cabella highway, authorities said on Tuesday, Jan. 7. She was 29 years old.
Spear was on a road trip with ex-husband Henry Thomas Berry, 39, and 5-year-daughter Maya, when their gray Toyota Corolla hit a blunt object that had been placed on the road, said forensic police director Jose Gregorio Sierralta. It’s been suggested that the object was strategically placed as part of a planned armed robbery.
They waved down a tow truck, which stopped to help on the road between Puerto Cabello and Valencia. But before the two truck workers could operat the crane, five armed men emerged on the road and opened fire.
The truck’s operators fled to a police station about 1.5 kilometers away while the couple locked themselves inside with their daughter. But the criminals fired multiple shots at the car killing Both Spear and her ex. Their daughter, Maya, was shot in the leg; but the little girl survived after receiving medical treatment.
Interior Minister Miguel Rodriguez talked to the press after the incident and told that five people have been detained and were interrogated in connection with the killings. However, no arrests have been made yet.
“To think there are people who can shoot a mother and father in front of their daughter is very sad and unbelievable,” the couple’s friend, Diego Sanchez told NBC. “And it’s shocking when it happens to someone you know.”
Spear costar, Jencarlos Canela, also mourned her death. “I’m without words,” Canela tweeted. “I will miss my friend @MonicaSpear. And I love you, beautiful Maya. You are not alone!”
Spear was crowned Miss Venezuela in 2004, while she was a quarter-finalist in the 2005 Miss Universe contest. She later starred in a half-dozen soap operas, and most recently appeared in the Miami-based Telemundo series Pasion Prohibida and Flor Salvaje.
