Former ‘The Challenge’ Star Diem Brown Knew She Had Colon Cancer Prior to Show
Knowing how short life is can be painful especially if you bear it alone, but for Diem Brown, she preferred keeping things to herself all this time as she helped “The Challenge” go on for its new season.
In what may be considered to be one of the most heart-breaking moments in TV, viewers got to see Brown on her last episode in “The Challenge: Battle of the Exes” on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2015. After this episode was shot last year, Brown was sent to the hospital where she eventually succumbed to her colon cancer and died last November 2014. But what most do not know is that Brown already knew of her colon cancer before the show started its shooting.
Most of the cast members didn’t know of Brown’s cancer coming back until the night she was sent to the hospital after spending most of the day in bed, presumably because of eating too much peanut butter in a challenge. It turns out what they thought was just a stomach ache was much worse.
In an interview with TV by the Numbers, “The Challenge” cast member and Brown’s good friend Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio revealed that Brown knew of her colon cancer since her birthday in June, around two months before the challenge started.
“That night they took Diem to the hospital — I have never seen Johnny that emotional ever. Johnny was sitting there and telling me how the cancer came back — I had no idea, but he knew. [He] had tears in your eyes. I had never, ever seen [him] like that before,” said Nany González, Devenanzio’s partner on the show.
Despite knowing of her illness months prior to the challenge, Brown proceeded to joining “The Challenge,” saying that should she win, she will use the prize money to pay for surrogates to have her baby. Having survived ovarian cancer twice before her colon cancer, anyone can say that Brown was definitely a strong woman.
