Former US President Jimmy Carter Will Present Bob Dylan with MusiCare’s 2015 Person of the Year Award [WATCH VIDEO]
Bob Dylan will be honored as the 2015 MusiCares Person of the Year on Friday, Feb. 6, 2015. Neil Portnow, President/CEO of the MusiCares Foundation and The Recording Academy, and Bill Silva, Chair of the MusiCares Foundation Board, announced the news. American singer-songwriter, artist and writer will be honored for his extraordinary contribution towards popular music and culture for more than five decades. Dylan has won many awards throughout his career including 11 Grammy Awards, one Academy Award and one Golden Globe Award. He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2000, Dylan was awarded the Polar Music Prize. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.
Motivated by the performances of Little Richard and the songwriting of Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson and Hank Williams, his lyrics have incorporated a variety of political, social, philosophical and literary influences that defied existing pop music caucus. In his recording career spanning more than five decades, he performed with guitar, keyboards and harmonica. He has explored and experimented with American music, from folk, blues and country to gospel, rock and roll, and rockabilly to English, Scottish and Irish folk music, embracing even jazz and swing.
Dylan has been described as one of the most prominent personalities of the 20th century, musically and culturally. He was included in the Time 100: The Most Important People of the Century where he was called “master poet, caustic social critic and intrepid, guiding spirit of the counterculture generation.”
In 2008, the Pulitzer Prize jury awarded him a special citation for “his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power.” Dylan has published “Tarantula,” a work of prose poetry, “Chronicles: Volume One,” the first part of his memoirs. He has also published many books of the lyrics of his songs and six books encompassing of his works of art.
Proceeds from the 25th annual benefit gala dinner and concert — to be held in Los Angeles during GRAMMY Week two nights prior to the 57th Annual GRAMMY Awards will provide essential support for MusiCares (http://www.musicares.org).The MusiCares Foundation offers programs and services to members of the music community, including emergency financial assistance for basic living expenses such as rent, utilities and car payments; medical expenses including doctor, dentist and hospital bills; psychotherapy; and treatment for HIV/AIDS, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, hepatitis C and other critical illnesses.
Dylan will be honored as the 2015 MusiCares Person of the Year at a special event celebrating his extraordinary creative accomplishments and to celebrate MusiCares’ 25th anniversary. MusiCares Person of the Year tribute is one of the most prestigious events held during GRAMMY Week. The celebration culminates with the 57th Annual GRAMMY Awards on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2015, at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. The telecast will be broadcast live on the CBS Television Network at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.
