Fortitude Recap: Episode Eight

“Fortitude,” Season 1, Episode Eight aired last Thursday, March 12, 2015 at 10:00 p.m. on Pivot and Sky Atlantic. In this episode, Fortitude became more agitated after Dr. Margaret Allerdyce (Phoebe Nicholls) was attacked by her own daughter, who was found dead. They, hence, brought in Markus Husklepp (Darren Boyd) for questioning. Meanwhile, Carrie Morgan (Elizabeth Philips-Dormer) returned and was taken care of by Elena Ledesma (Veronica Echegui).  Read on to learn more about this episode.

The episode began with Shirley Allerdyce (Jessica Gunning), soaked in blood, standing out in the snow. Meanwhile, Governor Hildegard Odegard (Sofie Grabol), who was at the mainland talking to investors, ignored her husband’s calls, and learned from Sheriff Dan Anderssen (Richard Dormer) that Dr. Margaret Allerdyce (Phoebe Nicholls) had been attacked, but was still alive, and her daughter was nowhere to be found. She then promised that she would ask for help and return the very same day.

At the doctor’s house, Police Officer Petra (Alexandra Moen), didn’t react well to helping Police Officer Ingrid (Mia Jexen) process the crime scene.

Meanwhile, Ronnie Morgan (Johnny Harris) agreed with his daughter Carrie Morgan (Elizabeth Dormer-Philips) that they should return to Fortitude because of the growing infection in his arm. However, after he fainted in the snow, Carrie decided to return alone to get help for him.

At the hotel bar, Detective Chief Inspector Eugene Morton (Stanley Tucci) asked Henry Tyson (Sir Michael Cambon) again about the day that Billy Pettigrew died, but was interrupted by scared townsfolk who told him that Dr. Allerdyce had been attacked. They then decided to bring in the first person on the scene, Markus Huseklepp (Darren Boyd) who also happened to be Liam Sutter’s (Darwin Bokenbro) teacher and Shirley’s boyfriend.

Afterwards, Ingrid and Petra discovered Shirley, who was in the supermarket, surrounded by food. She then died because of a heart attack, and they were both surprised when Carrie walked in on them. They then brought Shirley to the morgue, and Carrie to the hotel so that Elena Ledesma (Veronica Echegui) could look after her until her father was found.

This led Dan and Morton to consider the possibility that Shirley had indeed attacked her mother, just like Liam had attacked Professor Stoddart, and decided to question Markus again. This led Frank Sutter (Nicholas Pinnock) to believe that everything had been Markus’ fault, which led him to break into his house to steal any evidence he could possibly gather against Markus.

Meanwhile, while Dan checked on Elena and Carrie at the hotel, and informed Elena of what had happened. On the way back to the police station, Dan was confronted by Ciaran Donelly (Jonjo O’ Neil), who began telling him that they would round up the Russian miners as they believed that everything was their fault. They did do this, but their illegal interrogation of a Russian miner was stopped short after Elena and Carrie, who were on their way back to the Morgan house, intervened.

Meanwhile, Ronnie passed by the cabin with very agitated huskies, and went inside his house, only to find the projector, which was playing a home video of Carrie’s mother, on. He was then struck unconscious by an unknown assailant and hauled off somewhere. By the time Carrie and Elena came in, Ronnie wasn’t there, and the two got a little scare after the fuse tripped.

Back on the mainland, Hilda realized that they weren’t going to send any help, and after telling her husband that she was returning home that same day, told him that she was going to leave him.

Meanwhile, Henry watched as his shaman friend, Tavrani (Ramon Tikaram) made a totem doll for Liam’s protection.

During the interrogation, Dan and Morton told Markus that he had killed Shirley by overfeeding her so that she would resemble his mother, who looked a lot like her. They also discovered a picture of two boys on a hunting trip being anointed, as per tradition, with “the blood of their first kill”. However, as they only had circumstantial evidence, they let him go.

Later, during the town meeting, people told Dan that they were scared, and Henry, who was backed by scientific evidence, told them that something was going on with the animals in the island. Hilda then calmed everyone down, with the false promise of help from the mainland.

Afterwards, Frank attacked and kidnapped Markus so that he would tell him the truth; and Elena, after singing Carrie to sleep, became frightened as it seemed like there was somebody else in the house.
