FOX Grows Bold with ‘Backstrom’ Ad [WATCH VIDEO]

FOX has released the latest poster and teaser to “Backstrom,” its latest crime drama. The show stars Rainn Wilson (“The Office”) in the titular role, and his character is portrayed as a bigoted but effective detective. In line with this, FOX’s ad campaign for the show carries the same tone as the character, wherein the new posters released by the network boldly implies that Backstrom is a “brilliant detective, total dick.” Shocked by the words? Read on for more about this new item.

The latest poster for “Backstrom” features the image of Wilson in a simple key art. However, the words “brilliant detective, total dick” isn’t hard to miss in the design as it covers the whole piece. While the poster contains strong words, it aptly describes the kind of character Wilson plays in the series.

The poster has been set up in billboards across the United States as part of the promotion, but FOX said that a backup key art may be set up should the offensive language cause any problems and strong reaction from the public. As of press time, however, there is no news of any complaints drawn from the poster.

FOX has been in this type of situation before. In promoting its new series “Red Band Society” back in the fall, the network has set up posters that described Octavia Spencer’s character Nurse Jackson as a “scary bitch.” The posters were immediately removed from buses in Los Angeles after it met many complaints for offensive language.

Meanwhile, the latest teaser to “Backstrom” also has the very same words, as well as other descriptions for the character. The teaser pretty much hammers how much of a genius Backstrom is, despite his many other faults and shortcomings, he still does the job better than anyone.

“Backstrom” is created by Hart Hanson based on the novel by Swedish author Leif G.W. Persson. Hanson is also the creator of the long-running FOX crime series “Bones.”

Backstrom” premieres on FOX on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2015, at 9:00 p.m. We will be following the show here on Movie News Guide (MNG), so do check back for more. Watch the teaser below.
