‘Fresh Off the Boat’ Recap: Home Sweet Home School

“Fresh Off the Boat” Episode 2 “Home Sweet Home School” aired last Feb. 4, 2015 at 8:30 p.m. on ABC. The episode kicks off with the school principal orienting the parents about a wanted man who gives illegal drugs to children. Jessica Huang raises her hand. Read on to know what she is going to say.

Jessica stands up after the principal called her. She asks when the report cards are going to be given.

At Cattleman’s Ranch Steakhouse, Jessica sings in front of the diners to entertain them. However, she keeps commenting on every mistake of the employees like giving extra napkins and the restaurant host Mitch eating the croutons. Louis stops her and leads her out of the stage. Jessica scolds him that they are losing money everyday for one month already. She dislikes Louis using his kindness to lead his employees and serve the customers. Then she stops a customer who is about to use the pepper bottle because she believes he is wasting money.

Eddie is nervous about his report card. He remembers his mother tearing off his shirt just to find the report card sticking on his body. Jessica sees Evan and Emery’s report cards. She is appalled to see stickers instead of numerical grades. On the other hand, Eddie uses his grandmother to play a hip-hop song to welcome him into the room. He is proud to say that he receives straight As. However, Jessica complains to the principal on how easy their curriculum is. She asks if there is a Chinese Learning Center (CLC) in Orlando, Florida. The principal says there is none but proudly shares that the school offers an after-school program to learn about farm animals.

Jessica shares her sentiments to Louis. She wants to establish her own CLC, but she thinks the restaurant needs her. Louis encourages her to teach because she is smart.

Eddie was supposed to go out and play when Jessica stops him. Jessica says that she will teach them CLC. The younger sons are thrilled. Eddie hates the idea. The mama’s boy Evan does the monitoring as Jessica cooks.

When Eddie met Louis in the house, he is shocked that his father said “I love you.” He becomes certain that he is hiding something from him. Later, he goes to the restaurant and sees his father using the jukebox and dancing with the employees.  He calls his mother who just cannot believe him. Jessica calls Louis to clarify. Louis tells her that Eddie is making up stories to skip home school. Jessica almost believes him, but Louis says “I love you.”

Jessica goes to the restaurant and unplugs the jukebox. She is so furious because she thinks the jukebox is wasting money. She decides to teach CLC in the restaurant.

“I don’t want you here,” Louis bravely tells his wife.

Jessica tells Louis to stop being so kind. She challenges Louis to handle the suspicious-looking teenage diners who ordered the most expensive dishes. After talking to the teenagers, Louis returns to Jessica with a wide smile on his face. Unfortunately, those diners ran away as soon as he turned his back, just like Jessica’s prediction. Louis excuses himself to ponder. The employees gather before Jessica and offers to pay the check. They are thankful for Louis’s kindness.

Eddie is walking on the sidewalk after escaping from his mother’s CLC. He is surprised to see Jessica following him in a car. Turns out, she is chasing the teenage diners. She successfully stops them and makes them promise to apologize to Louis. She still does not want to say goodbye to Louis’s gentle nature.

In the end, Jessica goes to Evan and Emery’s teacher to ask about the stickers on the report cards. While listening to a very complicated explanation, she tells her children that their teacher is crazy in Chinese.
