G.I Joe Wins Weekend War at the Box Office
This past weekend’s box office receipts war was won by G.I. Joe Retaliation, with a three-day total estimated at $41 million. The movie opened on Thursday with a one-day figure of $10 million, which brought its domestic four-day total to more than $51 million.
The first version of G.I. Joe opened in the summer with a total of $54 million its first weekend. It proceeded to earn just over $150 million and the latest version could well be on track for the same or more. That however, will barely pay the reported $130 million budget for the movie. Still too early to be sure, but a third version of a G.I. Joe might not happen.
The Croods was able to produce a second weekend of strong numbers with a second place finish of $26 million. Part of that was thanks it being the Easter weekend, which is notorious for being a family friendly three day period. The Croods now moves to a domestic gross of $88 million.
Temptation: Confession of a Marriage Counselor by Tyler Perry ended the weekend in third place with a take of over $22 million. Compared to other Perry movies, an opening of $22 million puts the movie in the middle of the road with the other 13 films from the talented director. It was not one of the more successful ones, but by no means was it the least successful.
Olympus Has Fallen, the surprise of last weekend finished this weekend in fourth place with a take of just over $14 million. The film had low expectations from critics but has earned $54 million over a two-week period.
Rounding out this weekend’s top five was Oz the Great and Powerful with earnings of more than $11.6 million. The film by Disney has earned just less than $200 million and continues to climb.
