‘Game of Thrones:’ Is Arya Stark Permanently Blind?

Game of Thrones” Season 5 finale has brought a lot of shockers and one of them is Arya’s blindness. She was punished for killing Ser Meryn Trant and taking a face from the House of Black and White. While being blind is a form of punishment for her, Jacquen took the bigger blow drank poison because “only death can pay for life.” The question is, is she permanently blind?

In “A Song of Ice and Fire” book series, Arya also went blind but only a part of her training, not actually a punishment. So maybe the creators of the series turned things around. Her blindness heightens her abilities and allows her to move to the next level as a Faceless Man. In “Dance with Dragons” her sight is restored and took her first kill, a corrupt insurance broker and she is successful in this conquest.

However, things are different in the series. David Benioff explained, “The Faceless Men don’t kill for revenge – they’re not killing out of anger, they’re killing because death is a gift and the idea is a painless death is almost like your letting people go, and that’s not Arya’s way. Arya’s not dealing out death as a gift to Meryn Trant, it’s for herself.”

Dan Weiss also explained, “You don’t take a face from the Hall of Faces until you’re ready. She did it for personal reasons, for ego reasons, for Arya’s reasons. She couldn’t really bring herself to throw away Arya Stark, and this was Arya Stark doing this, it wasn’t ‘no one’ doing this. And it was a violation of the rules of the House of Black and White, and she pays for it.”

It is unlikely that Arya will go permanently blind, though and there is a big chance that she will regain her sight in “Game of Thrones” Season 6.
