Girl Meets World Recap: Girl Meets Smackle
“Girl Meets World” Season 1 Episode 8 “Girl Meets Smackle” aired last Friday, Sept. 12, 2014, at 8:30 p.m. on Disney Channel. In this episode, Riley Matthews (Rowan Blanchard) and her friends Maya Hart (Sabrina Carpenter), Farkle (Corey Fogelmanis) and Lucas Friar (Peyton Meyer) learned about making assumptions and about inner and outward beauty — thanks to the interscholastic debate on whether beauty is only skin deep. Meanwhile, Riley’s younger brother, Auggie (August Maturo), was troubled after he found out that there would be a possibility that he would not end up with his little ‘girlfriend’ in the future. During Cory Matthew’s (Ben Savage) history class, Riley and her friends learned about how one should not make assumptions based on outward appearances and to appreciate what things truly are on the inside. He demonstrated this to the class through two nicely wrapped presents — one that was big and another that was smaller.
The bigger box, which Riley claimed, contained a blackboard with the day’s lesson, the Trojan Horse, written on it. The smaller box, which Lucas claimed, contained a “get- out-of-detention-free” card. Maya immediately took the opportunity to take the card and avoid detention after dancing on Cory’s teacher’s table, only to realized that the card was worthless and outlined what Maya just did.
Meanwhile, Farkle and the debate team participated in the interscholastic debate tournament, in which he faced off with the Einstein Academy representative, Isadora Smackle, who defeated Farkle in a debate about whether school uniforms were necessary. Cory, who facilitated the debate, announced that the final debate of the season would be held next week at their school, with the topic: Is beauty only skin deep?
However, despite her victory, Smackle was disappointed as Farkle was only interested in her as a rival. This prompted her to ask for some help from Maya and Riley, who Farkle has a crush on. The girls then gave her a makeover by removing her glasses, fixing her hair and changing her outfit into a more fashionable one.
Back at school, Lucas, who does enjoy debates, decided to to join the debate team. However, Farkle’s two team mates were not so keen on the idea as Lucas looks like a jock and someone who would never join the debate team. Farkle reminded them not to judge based on appearances alone, and since Lucas was his friend, he was welcomed to the team.
At that moment, Riley and a bespectacled Maya walked into the room. Farkle then told Maya that she looked nice whether or not she had glasses on. Maya then asked him if he wanted to go out with them, which prompted Farkle to fall on the floor in shock, assuming that the girls were asking him out on a date. However, they told him that they wanted him to meet a girl that he might like.
At the restaurant, Riley and Maya presented the new and improved Smackle to Farkle. However, Farkle was not impressed and was surprised at the fact that the girls had not realized that Smackle was using Maya and Riley to prepare for the upcoming debate. She confirmed this and told them that she would not be different on the inside just because her outward appearance was different. Lucas then walked in and told Smackle, and complimented her, which caused her to giggle and blush. Farkle took advantage of this new development by trying to see how distracted Smackle would be with Lucas if he sat down beside her. It worked, as she was unable to answer a simple math question that Farkle posed to her.
Back at home, Auggie decided to ask for some advice and help from Riley. It turned out that Auggie’s little girlfriend, Ava, had told him that they might not end up marrying each other in the future, ruining his belief that one should only have one true love, just like his parents.
Riley and Maya then made Auggie realize that since Ava did not really break up with him, which his mother Topanga (Daniel Fishel) assumed, he still had a girlfriend. Farkle, on the other hand, was conflicted because he wanted to defeat Smackle in a fair fight and not the way she is now — made over and distracted by Lucas. Maya and Riley promised to help change her back, but Smackle refused.
At the final debate, Lucas and Smackle faced off against each other as they each represented their teams for the closing satement.
Lucas told the audience that the “quest for outer beauty at the cost of one’s inner self is a road to personal destruction” and that one should never judge based on outward appearances. He used himself as an example, saying that even his friends call him a “jock” and a “cowboy.” However, in reality, he does love going to school, and he is actually a really good student with good grades.
A well-dressed Smackle then gave her closing statement. She told the audience that her recent experiences had taught her that beauty is indeed skin deep and that in today’s world, pretty does seem to better, as one feels good when people compliment you or look at you differently if you change the way you dress and fix yourself. However, it should not matter on whether you look like you are popular or smart, because what really matters is what is inside.
After the debate, Riley, Maya, Smackle, Farkle and Lucas went out to celebrate Smackle’s victory. While there, in front of Farkle, she asked Lucas if he wanted to have a smoothie with her, prompting Riley to tell her to back off. Farkle then commented that Smackle was enjoying her “newfound confidence.” However, Maya realized that Smackle was using Lucas to make Farkle jealous. Smackle then asked Farkle if he would still like Maya and Riley if they weren’t beautiful. To this, he just replied, “They’re beautiful? Oh yeah. I haven’t really noticed” It revealed that he likes the two girls for who they are and not because of their outward appearance.
