“The Giver” Synopsis:
The story focuses on Jonas (Thwaites). He lives in an ideal and colorless world. Memories of the people’s hostile past had been erased and only known to the Receiver of Memory, also known as the Giver (Bridges). When Jonas and his friends graduated from childhood, the Chief Elder (Streep) has bestowed tasks on them. Fiona (Rush) will take care of the newborns until they are sent to foster families. Asher (Monaghan) will fly the drones that guard the people and call their attention if they have violated a rule. Jonas, secretly realizing that he sees a flick of color in their black-and-white world, will be the Receiver of Memory. He studies with his predecessor until he is ready to sit with the Elders and advise them on certain matters.
The Receiver allowed Jonas to experience all the sensations and knowledge denied to other citizens. Jonas then learns and begins to understand about the dark truths about his community’s past.
“The Giver” Review:
As of this writing, the critics from Rotten Tomatoes have given this film a 29 percent, while 96 percent of the moviegoers would like to see it.
Entertainment Weekly’s Jeff Labrecque gave the film a C-. He mentioned on his review that the film “practically collapses under its own.”
“In the end, the film practically collapses under its own…hmm, what’s the opposite of ‘weight’? In any case, it falls apart with a slapdash final act that doesn’t work as drama or action and only serves to undermine Jonah’s heroics,” wrote Labrecque in the Entertainment Weekly article.
Moreover, John DeFore of The Hollywood Reporter noted in his review that the ending of the film ruined the acceptable take on the well-loved young adult novel.
