“Glee” Season 5 Episode 18 “The Back-Up Plan” Recap:

“Glee” Season 5 Episode 18 “The Back-Up Plan” (air date: April 29, 2014) focused on several “Glee” members as they tried to build musical careers after they graduated from high school.

Rachel. Rachel was enjoying her successful Broadway debut in “Funny Girl” as it got some great reviews. It’s not surprising that she wanted to try out her skill in acting. Unfortunately, she cannot fully enjoy the best of both worlds when she was just blossoming out. Her producer told her that she’s a “face for radio,” an insult she did not take well. After some time, she called in sick and flew to the TV audition. It seemed that it wasn’t the best time to showcase her singing prowess, but rather her rusty acting chops. Things continued to get worse for her when her understudy at Broadway cannot attend the show. Rachel must act fast or her upcoming singing career may get into the chopping board next.

Performed song/s: “Wake Me Up” by Avicii and Aloe Blacc; “The Rose” by Bette Midler

Mercedes. Despite the huge development in her relationship with Sam, Mercedes is now on her way to getting a recording break. She is confident with her talented voice, but her label doesn’t think she had any “hits” on her album.

Performed song/s: “Doo Wop (That Thing)” by Lauryn Hill

Santana.  Santana was invited by Mercedes to help her with her album and to give Santana a chance of being included in the album. With her help, Mercedes has finally found a possible “hit” with their duet, but Mercedes’ label doesn’t think so. In the end, Mercedes gave her a contract that can help Santana to start off a music career. On the other hand, she was asked by Kurt to help Rachel on her “Fanny” problem. She had thought of helping her former rival by replacing her understudy in Broadway. Her portrayal was given rave reviews, as well.

She’s finally here! Shirley MacLaine joined the Glee cast as a guest star in “Glee” Season 5. MacLaine appeared on “The Back-Up Plan” as the influential socialite named June Dolloway. June is the one who would help Blaine to become a superstar.

Kurt and Blaine. Kurt was excited when he heard the news about a duet invitation from a well-known socialite that he cannot refuse. He had even invited Blaine to join them. The couple sang a song that was well-received by the audience. Unfortunately, Blaine seemed to catch June’s eyes and Kurt was hurt and felt jealous by it. Kurt bottled up his feelings and told Blaine to go on with his career with the help of June.

Performed song/s: One Direction’s “Story of my Life” (Kurt and Blaine); Janis Joplin’s “Piece Of My Heart” (Blaine and June)
