Han Solo spinoff film auditions 2,500 people
Six films (with a seventh on the way). A handful of television series. Numerous video games. Countless books and comic books. Even hundreds and thousands of official (and unofficial) merchandise like toys, clothing apparel, notepads, and “name it, they’ve got it.” Undeniably, Star Wars is one of the most successful franchises of this (and perhaps even the previous) generation. It is then not surprising that lots of people — actors and actor-wannabes — want to jump into the Star Wars fame. The audition for the young Han Solo is proof of that.
Disney has a number of Star Wars films lined up. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is but the first of a sequel trilogy. Next year, it will be followed by the prequel spin-off, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” And perhaps one of the most anticipated films in this line-up is the anthology film based on the life of a young Han Solo, the older version of whom is played by iconic Harrison Ford in the original and the new trilogies.
But the job of choosing who will fill the sure to be larger-than-life shoes proves to be difficult. The Hollywood Reporter has just posted that a total of 2,500 (and counting) people have already either met with the casting director and the directors or gone on the tape.
The task of narrowing down the choices do fall on the shoulders of casting director Jeanne McCarthy and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. According to a source, the three have been meeting with everyone, both known actors and those who are still looking at a shot to fame. This is a complete opposite to J.J. Abrams’ approach with “The Force Awakens.” Abrams made sure to find relative unknowns in casting his younger characters Rey and Finn.
Another interesting bit about the Han Solo audition is that there seems to be no strict age range for those who are allowed to go on tape. Numbers that have surfaced are aged from as young as 16 years old to as old as 32 years old.
The Han Solo film will be written by the father-and-son tandem Lawrence and Jon Kasdan. It scheduled to start filming in January 2017 and scheduled for release in May 25, 2018. Stay tuned for further updates.
